Everyone knows the story of How The Grinch Stole Christmas, but you haven’t seen it like this before! If you are looking for the perfect way to celebrate the holiday season, look no further. Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical is playing at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre for a limited time and you do not want to miss it. This family friendly show is also the best way to introduce a younger audience to live performances.
The show itself flies by with a runtime of just 85 minutes, while simultaneously expanding on the story we all know and love. Packed with catchy songs, incredible performances, and unlimited laugh out loud moments, this is something the whole family will truly enjoy.
Everyone loves a good villain, which is exactly what the Grinch is. Throughout this show it is easy to connect with him, laugh at him, and when the time comes to let him know he is a MEAN one, audiences will have a blast belting out the lyrics. This time around we get a little bit more time with him, so when his heart grows three sizes, it is impossible not to cheer and be excited.
There is a lot more music in this version of the story, and each song is somehow better than the last — kids will be singing them on the way home (at least mine were!). This time around the story of How The Grinch Stole Christmas is told by Old Max. He is getting on in years and it is time to leave Whoville, but first, he explains the story of the Grinch to the audience. This brings a whole new element to things which is extremely enjoyable — especially when both Maxes are on stage together. As an adult, it is easy to relate to remembering your younger self and the events of the past.
The audience also gets quite a bit more time with the Whos, getting to know Papa, Mama, Grandma, and the absolutely hysterical Grandpa, as well as more Who children. Giving these characters more time to shine is a brilliant move, as it helps to allow those watching to connect more with the village and those that live there. We all know Cindy-Lou Who, but it is exciting to have the time with other Whos, and get to know what they are really about.
Fans will still get to see the story they know and love, it is just expanded upon, which allows even more heart, humor, and entertainment to shine. There is nothing quite like a live performance as well.
There is no way to talk about this musical without touching on the incredible sets and stage effects. The way scenes effortless change is a testament to just how talented the stage crew is. While everything is extremely detailed and perfect, right down to the candles for the tree at the end, the visuals of the Grinch, the sleigh, and Max flying through the night must be mentioned. They are absolutely jaw-dropping.
In Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical Joshua Woodie perfectly portrays the Grinch, bringing heart and humor to the role. While he is a force to be reckoned with and draws a lot of attention on stage, it is Cindy-Lou Who that steals the show. In the performance I watched, she was played by Aerina Deboer, but I am certain Melodie Rose Romano does just as good a job (the two alternate).
Cindy-Lou has always been the heart of the story. While the events of the night she discovers the Grinch in her home are switched up a little bit, the heart is still there. Perhaps even more so. Deboer commanded attention on stage, even when she was just a part of the ensemble during group songs. She is not only adorable, but it is clear she was thrilled to be up on that stage.
If you are looking for something to do as a family this holiday season, look no further. Get ready to instill the love of live performances in your little ones as Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical is the ideal length for those just being introduced to musicals. Plus, there is no intermission which means the story is told seamlessly. It moves at a fast past that will keep everyone entertained, and trust me when I say these performers give it their all, and are sure to make sure the audience is captivated from start to finish.
