Upload season 3 brings a whole lot of drama due to a love… square? The Nathan we all know and love has downloaded, but a new Nathan was backed up to the Lakeview system. This new Nathan hasn’t experienced all of the events that the actual Nathan has, which means he is still in a relationship with Ingrid. This might sound confusing, but trust us, it makes for a whole lot of fun.

Mama’s Geeky got the chance to catch up with none other than Nathan himself, Robbie Amell, to discuss Upload season 3. He reveals what it was like to get to play two different versions of the same character.

Upload Production Designer Talks Season 3 Details / Robbie Amell Interview

“Playing two characters was super cool,” Robbie says. He explains that he has answered this question a few times, and it always comes back to the writers. “Greg and Owen and Maxwell and the entire writing team were so good at keeping the characters innately the same but just having these fun little quirky differences.”

From the beginning, the conversation surrounded how the original Nathan would feel after being downloaded to the real world. He isn’t in Lakeview any more and things are a little bit darker for him. He has Nora and their relationship, but everything else is pretty scary and grim. As Robbie Amell puts it, “his head might explode at any minute and they’re trying to track down a murderer, and stop election fraud, and the real world just doesn’t look as nice as Lakeview.”

At the same time, backup Nathan is in Lakeview living it up. “He starting a relationship with Ingrid and things are going well. And he’s like, got a fanny pack, which is just odd for any Nathan but I really dug it and we leaned into it, which was fun and gave me a little bit of weirdness.”

Robbie explains that it was a lot of fun and nice to get to something that was a little scary and different. “I had to act opposite an acting double who I would show how I was going to do the scene and then he would step off, and then I would do it with nobody. And then I would change and I would do with myself with an earpiece in so that I could time the lines out.”

He says that the crew was amazing with it, and they put him in a position to succeed. He also applauds the post production team, saying they were fantastic. “I was very lucky. And I was spoiled this season. And I’m glad it worked out.”

About Upload Season 3

Upload is a sci-fi comedy series from Emmy-winning writer Greg Daniels (The Office, Parks and Recreation, King of the Hill), set in a technologically advanced future where holographic phones, self-driving vehicles, AI assistance, and 3D food printers are the norm. And, forget about dying – instead, you’ll be “uploaded” to a virtual reality afterlife, and enjoy all the comforts of a world-class resort. Provided you can afford it.

In Upload Season Three, Nathan has been duplicated. While “download” Nathan is reuniting with Nora, a Horizen customer service rep realizes he is missing from Lakeview and restores a backup “upload” of him. Now more than ever, Nathan, Nora, Ingrid, Luke, Aleesha … and even A.I. Guy, struggle to find a balance in their careers, technology, and love between the real world and the virtual reality “after-life.”
