At MegaCon Orlando, James McAvoy tells fans what he would have wanted from X-Men 5 and… it’s a love story?
James McAvoy Wanted X-Men 5 To Be A Love Story!?
MegaCon Orlando is currently going on this weekend and James McAvoy just revealed what he would have liked from another X-Men film. Fans loved him in the role of Professor Charles Xavier, to the point where they have had their fingers crossed for him to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe now that the multiverse door has been blown wide open.
Host Coy Jandreau asked McAvoy his wishes for X-Men 5 and the answer might surprise you.
James McAvoy’s first thought is that he would like to see a meaningful love story for Charles Xavier. He explains the one with Moira MacTaggert had a lot of potential, but despite having a great actress in the role (Rose Byrne), they never really chased it down.
This is something that some X-Men fans have asked for, as well. It felt like the set-up was there, but that there was never a follow through.
That isn’t all that he would have liked to see come about in another film, however. “I would have loved to have seen more of [Charles] and Magneto together because that first movie that we did, which I think was such a surprise for everybody, it was such a surprise for many reasons, but one of them was the strength of the relationship.”
Magento is played by Michael Fassbender in these X-men films and James is not wrong at all. They had an unparelleled chemistry on screen and X-Men fans everywhere would have loved to see more of it.
McAvoy goes on to explain that he feels that they never “chased [the relationship]down with any conviction.” He says that Days of Future Past is a fantastic film, but they didn’t chase it down in that one either. Which is where they could have.
So for an X-Men 5, James McAvoy would have wanted a love story for Charles, as well as more depth and exploration of his relationship with Magneto. This interview took place during MegaCon Orlando 2023.
