History Of The World Part 2 Review: It Gets Old Real Fast

History of the World Part 2 is stacked with an incredible comedic cast but ultimately falls flat as the jokes become repetitive and unfunny.

It is always hard to compete with the original, but trying to recreate something as good as the History of the World Part I is nearly impossible. History of the World Part 2 tries, but ultimately fails, despite the stacked comedic cast and jokes that actually work. The biggest issue could be that it is split up into eight episodes, which will air over four nights, or maybe it is just that nothing will ever touch how hilarious the film was.

History of the World Part 2 does exactly what Part I does. It takes real moments in history, and real historical figures, and adds a whole ton of untrue and ridiculous elements. While sometimes this delivers truly hysterical moments, all too often it will evoke a chuckle from viewers at the very best. This is surprising because Mel Brooks is still a big part of the show, and his humor is written all over it.

The decision to make History of the World Part 2 a series is its ultimate downfall. If this was a 90 minute movie, it would have been much more entertaining as it would have been difficult for things to get as old and eye-rolling as they do.

The eight episodes tally up to four hours and that is much to long for this kind of dry humor to succeed. It should be said that we watched this back-to-back over two consecutive nights and so split up, it could work better for some viewers.

That isn’t to say all of the skits are bad, because they aren’t. In fact, most of them start off quite funny. However the full stories are all split up over the course of the episodes, instead of playing out in one sitting.

Should each episode have been dedicated to one or two stories, it would have worked much better. The back and forth is what kills them, especially as the same jokes are used over and over.

This causes the entire series to feel very repetitive and the humorous moments to dwindle quickly. Every once in a while a fantastic line is delivered by this talented cast and it works — but that is way too few and far between.

Overall Thoughts

Unfortunately, despite a great cast and smart stories, History of the World Part 2 just doesn’t work. It could have been better in a different format. Still, it has its moments and it isn’t all bad. This cast does what they can with it but it truly is the way the stories are split apart that ruins things.
