Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Pike’s Future Is Tested in A Quality of Mercy
SPOILER WARNING: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 1 Spoilers Ahead
The end is here. After getting to know the new crew of the Enterprise and joining them for the beginning of their five year mission, it is time for the first year to end. After celebrating the graduation of the ensigns, Pike realizes that his end is near, in seven years his accident will happen.
As shown in the first episode, Pike knows the cadets that he will save in the accident, and when one of the cadets, Maat, beams onboard the Enterprise, Pike decides to draft a letter to give to Maat to discourage him from enlisting in Starfleet.
As Pike drafts the letter, an older version of himself, in an Admiral uniform and without any scars, appears. He reveals that he is from the timeline where Pike was able to save himself and the cadets.
Pike is thrilled, as he realizes that there is a way to avoid his fate and still save the people he’s supposed to, however, Admiral Pike reveals that even though that is true, the consequences that him surviving that event have caused the fate of the universe to be at risk.
Admiral Pike shows him a Klingon time crystal that will show him the alternate timeline where he survives, in this timeline there were no cadets present and the accident did not leave any injured or dead. Pike arrives in the middle of an attack, and notices that Una is not his first officer, but rather Spock, Una is nowhere to be found.
The attack led by Romulans, who they are unaware of yet but are one of the Federation’s biggest enemies.
After the initial attack, they are hailed by the USS Farragut, that is being captained by none other than James T. Kirk. That is right, the iconic Starfleet captain has made his debut in the show after much anticipation.
Kirk and Pike clash as they try to figure out what the best course of action to deal with the Romulans is, as Kirk’s reputation to bend the rules worries Pike that could cause an all out war with the Romulans. Kirk tells Pike that the Romulans can’t be trusted, but asks Pike to allow him to have a backup plan.
Due to them being in the neutral zone and far away from Federation space, he asks for a shuttle. He then returns with mining ships and cargo ships to make the Romulans believe that they have backup.
As expected, the Romulans turn on them and attack the Enterprise. This aftermath of the attack resembles the one that Pike is going to suffer, but this time Spock ends up being the one suffering Pike’s fate. Admiral Pike returns and tells Pike that the consequences of him surviving the accident is an eternal war with the Romulans, that the only way for there to be peace is for him to not change his fate.
Kirk then returns and him and Pike bond, with Pike having a feeling that it won’t be the last time he will see the young captain.
Back in his correct timeline, Pike deletes the letter he was writing to the cadet and looks up Kirk’s file. Spock then goes to talk to him, where Pike says that he has finally made his peace.
He and Una are then called to the transporter room, where Una is arrested due to Starfleet finding out that she is an Illyrian, and the season ends with Pike stating that he will not give up until he can save Una.
Overall all Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 1 Thoughts
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 did not have a single dull moment in its entirety. It felt like old Trek while also having its own stakes and storylines and being able to give each character their moment to shine. It was a strong debut for new Trek and probably the best one, since it relied on episodic adventures rather than a full season storyline, which worked in its favor for ten episodes.
The introduction of Captain Kirk begs the question of who else might show up in season two, since there was a brief moment where Spock tries to fix the damages to the Enterprise, an engineer speaks to him over the intercom, sounding very similar to Scotty. Will there be more of Kirk’s crew that will show up in season two? We will have to wait and see.
