I’ve Never Seen Captain America: The Winter Soldier Before.
Captain America and Black Widow teaming up to kick some butt? Sign me up!
The next first-time Marvel watch on my list is Captain America: The Winter Soldier. In the second film of the Captain America series, our hero Steve Rogers and everyone’s favorite Russian Natasha Romanoff team up to stop a mysterious villain and try to stop a conspiracy forming in SHIELD.
Here’s what I thought.
1. I’m very excited to see my girl Black Widow kick some booty in this movie.
2. There’s the first “on your left” spotting!
3. OK now Steve is just trying to show off. Thirteen miles in 30 minutes!?!
4. Big reason to like Sam Wilson: He hates running.
5. Steve’s list of things to catch up on includes “I Love Lucy,” the moon landing, the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall, “Rocky,” Steve Jobs, Nirvana and Marvin Gaye. How is his mind not exploding over all of these things?
6. Black Widow pulling up in style.
7. Oooooh fossil burn!
8. Go team! Let’s do the mission!
9. No parachute? Alright mad man.
10. Yes, Cap, it’s much better to launch into an ocean than gently float into the water with a parachute.
11. Captain America will drop kick anyone to oblivion.
12. See! People are gently floating onto the ship with parachutes.
13. Everything Black Widow does is ICONIC!
14. SHIELD doesn’t negotiate!
15. Black Widow is being very sneaky with this hard drive. What is she plotting?
16. Oh, apparently she did have another mission that involved the hard drive. Thanks for clearing that up, Nick.
17. I’d say SHIELD has assembled quite the artillery for itself.
18. Awww Steve has his own section in the Smithsonian!
19. This kid is so shook haha.
20. RIP Bucky Barnes.
21. Peggy Carter!!! I’m still not over them missing their date 🙁
22. Even after so many years, Steve and Peggy have such a lovely relationship.
23. “I couldn’t leave my best girl, not when she owes me a dance” MY HEART!
24. Who is messing up Fury’s computer?!
25. Oh hey Robert Redford.
26. Asking for Iron Man to make an appearance at a birthday party lol.
27. Woah what is happening here!?! Nick’s got to get out of that car!
28. Everything is malfunctioning but at least the air conditioning works.
29. The regular people in this world cannot catch a break! Can’t even drive to work without something wild like this high-speed chase happening.
30. This girl really just rejected Steve Rogers?! Are you insane?
31. Leave Nick Fury alone! He’s had such a terrible day!
32. The cutie next door is an agent!?!
33. I think I know who this mystery villain is…
34. Noooo!!! Not Fury!!!
35. Ummm, someone definitely needs to check the vending machine.
36. Everyone is so sus now.
37. This elevator scene is making me so uncomfortable. There are way too many people here.
38. OK good to know I wasn’t the only one who thought things were fishy here!
39. Fury asked to hold off on Project Incite and here these people don’t want to listen! Flops!
40. It is so weird to see Steve and Natasha in regular clothes, and he’s doing SUCH a bad job of looking like a normal person. Stop looking around everywhere!
41. ALSO I can’t believe they went to an Apple store and didn’t take those Photobooth pictures that were all the craze in my middle school days.
42. I wish I could say “kiss me” to Steve Rogers.
43. Do I….ship Steve and Natasha right now???
44. Oh god please not a skinny Steve memory. I had just gotten that awful image out of my head.
45. Well this military base isn’t creepy at all!
46. Dr. Zola is the absolute worst! As if we didn’t know that already.
47. Robert Redford can’t even enjoy a glass of milk in his own home.
48. HEY! NOT COOL, ROBERT! SHE JUST WANTED HER PHONE!
49. It still doesn’t make sense that Natasha doesn’t have a Russian accent. Is this ever going to be explained? Or did Scarlett Johansson just not want to bother with one?
50. Time for Sam Wilson to join the crew!
51. DROP KICK!
52. I love that Natasha is still bringing up women for Steve to date after throwing this man off the roof.
53. OK, now I understand why Sam is The Falcon. Those wings!
54. Well HYDRA sounds totally terrifying!
55. Here’s our mystery man!
56. Try explaining this crazy car crash to an insurance company.
57. And now the traffic is going to be terribly delayed!
58. I can recognize those eyes anywhere, that’s definitely Bucky/Sebastian Stan.
59. And there is the reveal!
60. Agent Hill saves the day. Legend!
61. Fury is alive! They couldn’t get rid of him that easily.
62. Bucky is starting to remember Steve! Keep it up! Don’t be a bad boy – even though he has a knack for these roles.
63. Time to take down SHIELD. That’s going to be an awkward HR conversation.
64. UGH not skinny Steve again! Stop making me relive this nightmare.
65. Ahhh Stan Lee sighting! Please don’t fire him!
66. This is about to be an epic showdown fight.
67. I love this woman for beating up Robert Redford.
68. OH IT’S NATASHA! I love it even more now!
69. And here’s our destroyer friend Bucky causing havoc once again.
70. BAM! What an entrance from Fury.
71. “Man, shut the hell up.” YES! I’m so sick of hearing that agent talk.
72. Cap no! You can’t give up now!!
73. But honestly how did Bucky wake up that fast? He got choked out pretty badly I thought.
74. No way would anyone ever make that jump to the helicopter if this was real life.
75. Man Bucky is really doing a number on Steve.
76. Will Bucky go after Captain America and rescue him?
77. Awww he did!
78. “On your left!”
79. White guys trying to assert their dominance over a woman? Pretends to be shocked! But lucky for them Natasha puts up a good fight.
80. There’s that damn glowing blue stick again.
81. Wanda and Pietro! Things are about to get more interesting in this series.
82. Bucky just read his museum display and he must be so shook.
Overall Thoughts on Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Among the many MCU movies I’ve watched in this series so far, Captain America: The Winter Soldier was one of the more exciting ones. Having Steve and Natasha team up was pretty fun to see especially since most of the character-focused films have just featured one of the Avengers. The SHIELD conspiracy was also pretty well executed, although I did have to rewind a few times to make sure I completely understood an important plot development or detail.
The film throws a few twists and turns so you have to stay on your toes throughout the runtime. While I immediately knew who the Winter Soldier was, it was still fun to see an evil Bucky Barnes in action. Following the post-credit scene where we see Bucky in the Smithsonian looking at his display, I’m interested to see if he ever gets his memory back and joins forces with Captain America and the rest of the Avengers team.
There are a lot of positives with the film, but I do think it’s way too long. After all the action is over and done with at the end, it was hard for me to stay interested. Overall, the film is solid and packs a punch. Hopefully the series continues to get stronger!
Rating: 4 out of 5
