WARNING: SPOILERS FOR STRANGER THINGS SEASON 4 VOLUME 1

Throughout all of Stranger Things season 4 volume 1, the main villain is Vecna. He is revealed to the be the one killing teens early on, but his identity, and more about him, is not discovered until the final episode. And even then, the characters, besides perhaps El, are still in the dark about his identity.

Who Is Vecna In Stranger Things 4?

The wildest thing about Vecna, and what is perhaps the biggest shock of Stranger Things 4, is that El pretty much created Vecna. Sure, he was a really bad dude before he met her, that we know, but she took his human form and banished him to the Upside Down, where he clearly honed in his powers and was able to hunt down teens in Hawkins. Could this all be to get back at El? Possibly. One thing is for sure the two have some bad blood, and we can’t wait to see them duke it out.

In the final moments of Stranger Things season 4 volume 1, the audience learns that Vecna is not only the weird orderly from Hawkins Lab, but he is two other things. He is 001, and he is Victor Creel’s son. Now, it was easy to forget about this Creel child as we saw the daughter die the same gruesome death all of Vecna’s victims do, and were told the son died in the hospital a few days after the attack.

In retrospect, it doesn’t make sense that he would just be in a coma, and not have bent up limbs and be missing eyes like the rest. It turns out that Victor Creel’s son had strange powers, ones that his parents were scared of. He killed animals with his mind and raised Black Widow Spiders so eventually his mom and dad had enough. They planned to send him to a doctor — Dr. Martin Brenner of course.

Unsurprisingly, he was not ok with this so he attacked his mother, sister, and father. 001 was still young at the time and didn’t know his limits. He passed out from the insane use of power and slipped into a coma. Victor Creel was blamed for the murders, as was his son’s intentions all along. However, because he was sent to the hospital for his injuries, Dr. Brenner eventually got his hands on him anyways, and that is how he became 001.

Brenner realized that he was unable to control him, so he created more of him. He placed what can only be described as an inhibitor chip inside of him, and forced him to be an orderly to the other children. This is how he gained young 011’s trust. He manipulated her into thinking that Papa was coming after her, and trying to have her killed, so that she would remove the chip, which he told her was a tracking device, using her powers.

This allowed him to fully unleash his anger on the entirety of Hawkins Lab, killing all but El. He asked her to stay in the closet so she would not discover his true intentions, but she did and therefore he was forced to fight her when she wouldn’t join his side. The two both get in some good licks, but it is El who ends up opening a portal to the Upside Down, and banishing 001 into it. Here, he turns into Vecna.

The final two episodes of Stranger Things 4 drop on Netflix July 1st and this is when fans are sure to see a rematch between El and Vecna — and it is guaranteed to be epic.
