Unhuman Is Exactly What You Expect From Blumhouse

Unhuman is exactly what fans expect from Blumhouse Television and EPIX — a horror movie that is packed with gore and cheesy, ridiculous dialogue. And it works.

Blumhouse Unhuman movie review

Fans of Blumhouse movies know exactly what to expect when they hit play. Straight up cheesy dialogue, a whole lot of gore, less than perfect visual effects, but a whole lot of fun. And that is exactly what Unhuman delivers. This movie follows a group of High School students who just want to earn extra credit by going on a field trip. Unfortunately for them, they get a whole lot more than that. While their bus is on the way to their location, a zombie apocalypse of sorts breaks out, causing them to work together to take down this evil.

Blumhouse Unhuman movie review

Unhuman is bonkers fun, pretty much right from the start. The ninety minute runtime works perfectly, and the pacing never slows down. This movie goes from one insane moment to the next, and when things flip upside down about halfway through, it only gets better.

From the outside looking in, this script should not have worked. The dialogue is ridiculous, although quite self-deprecating, and while it is certainly filled with gore, the blood and guts never look real. It comes off almost as a satire, because viewers will be laughing with it, not at it. The premise is stupid, but also a whole lot of fun.

Blumhouse Unhuman movie review

The first half of Unhuman is certainly entertaining, however, once take a turn and it goes completely off the rails halfway through, this is where it starts to get good — like really, really good. In an effort to avoid spoilers that can ruin the audience’s experience, let’s just say the movie fully realizes what it is, and is unafraid to dive head first into. Once viewers are in on the joke, the movie is taken to a whole new level.

Brianne Tju is by far the best character, although Drew Scheid is easy to love too. Tju has a monologue towards the end of the movie that fully brings things full circle, and is filled with self realization moments. This movie is fun, action packed, and absolutely off the wall.

It doesn’t really teach any life lessons, but rather makes fun of when horror movies try to do that. The cast all work really well together, and give this thing their all. It is very clear they had a lot of fun shooting this one.

Blumhouse Unhuman movie review

For those who enjoy Blumhouse Television and EPIX, this is certainly one of the better ones. It is entertaining from start to finish. There are insane kills and the zombies are truly something else. But it is the humor and ridiculous dialogue mixed with bloody action that works so well, it takes it from a pointless watch, to a fun watch. Unhuman doesn’t take itself seriously, which is why this has the potential to become a cult classic.

Don’t forget to watch through the credits for a scene that will have those that enjoyed this movie, quite excited. Let’s hope something comes of it.
