The Freaky movie takes the classic Freaky Friday body switching story and makes it so much more hilarious with a killer and teenage girl.

As soon as I saw the trailer for Freaky I knew it was a movie that is right up my alley. Taking the classic Freaky Friday tale and turning it into horror comedy? Yeah, that is my jam. After finally getting to watch Freaky I have to admit, it is even better than I expected it to be.

Quick synopsis of the movie – The Blissfield Butcher finds a really cool knife and uses it to try to kill Millie. Except it is more than just a really cool knife. When he stabs here in the shoulder, he gets hurt too. In the same exact place. This was all done on Thursday the 12th, of course. So when Friday the 13th rolls around, they both wake up in each other’s bodies.

Millie needs to find a way to get back into her body, all while trying to avoid getting caught and arrested as the Blissfield Butcher. It certainly doesn’t help that her sister is a police officer. Luckily she is able to convince her friends that it is her inside this man’s body fairly early on (after a really fun fight scene).

    Cool Death Scenes

Vince Vaughn is absolutely hilarious as a teenage girl, the supporting characters of Josh and Nyla had me cracking up, and they added in some pretty sweet death scenes! Yes please! This movie starts right off with four gruesome murders. Like, within the first ten minutes I was covering my eyes, shouting, and having the time of my life.

If you have been following me for more than a month, then you probably know I love a good death scene. I talk about it way too often, and I know it means I have issues. But sometimes deaths in horror movies can get monotonous, let’s be honest here. So I always admire a movie that shakes things up a little bit with off the wall and insane ways to off someone.

Freaky takes it to the next level using thing like tennis rackets and table saws to get the blood spewing. Seriously, I would have to change up my favorite death scenes list now thanks to this movie. Because they totally brought it in this category!

    Vince Vaughn & Kathryn Newton

Vince Vaughn absolutely crushes it portraying a teenage girl trapped in a giant man’s body, but I don’t want to sleep on Kathryn Newton. These two capture each other so perfectly, right down to the mannerisms. It makes me wonder how much time they spent together getting it down this well. Some of my favorite scenes in this movie are of Vince Vaughn as the Blissfield Butcher, with Millie inside him.

But I have to admit, the Blissfield Butcher waking up in the morning, inside Millie’s body, is hilarious. One of the best scenes in the film, so I have to hand it to Kathryn Newton for pulling that off. The way she silently walked around the house figuring the whole thing out.

    Predictable But Oh So Fun

As with most comedy movies, this one is fairly predictable. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t a ton of fun — because it is! Sure, it is easy enough to figure out where the story line is moving to next. And while you might know who is going to bite the dust next, you probably won’t be able to guess how it is going to happen.

I was a little annoyed that I figured out a small twist towards the end before it happened, but it didn’t ruin the movie for me. Honestly, I had the best time I have had in a long time watching Freaky. It took me away from this crazy world for an hour and forty three minutes, which I really, really needed.

    Overall Thoughts

If you are looking for a thriller comedy that will have you rolling on the floor laughing most of the time, and covering your eyes during horrific deaths the rest of the time –than Freaky is for you! I say that Vince Vaughn steals the show in this one, and he totally does. He is brilliant the whole way through – as Millie and as the Blissfield Butcher.

However, the rest of the cast does a great job too. From Millie’s friends, to the smaller roles of her sister and her mother. Everyone comes together to make this movie a whole lot of fun to watch. Who would have thought Vince Vaughn as a teenage girl would be one of the best things to come out of 2020?
