Star Trek: Picard episode 8 recap and review

Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Picard Season 2 Episode 8

After being arrested, Guinan and Picard are being interrogated and being asked if they are “extraterrestrials” to which they both laugh and say no, it’s technically not a lie since they are both humans who happen to live and work in space most of the time. The interview is revealed to be a ruse, for something that neither Picard nor Guinan expect. The FBI agent knows that Picard and his crew trespassed to the party, and Guinan questions him and he reveals that the questioning is all to do with the upcoming mission that Renee is part of. If Picard and Guinan don’t comply, the mission will be canceled and the future forever altered.

Picard has just 19 hours to confess everything to the agent, and the agent reveals why he is so obsessed with Picard, as a child, he had an encounter with Vulcans. The Vulcans tried to erase his memories from the encounter, but were unsuccessful, from that moment on, the agent’s life changed and sees the world in a different way. After hearing this, Picard tells the truth, that he is a human from the future, who needs to save the world.

Q pays a visit to Guinan, who at first does not recognize him, as they have not met yet. As Guinan looks at him, she finds out the truth—Q is dying, or as he refers to it, he’s at the “edge of the road not taken”. In a powerful scene, Q prepares for death, an event that he is not familiar with, despite knowing everything. He reveals that his main reason for tormenting Picard, is because he is trying to find purpose in his life.

Star Trek: Picard episode 8 recap and review

Seven and Raffi are trying to find Agnes/Borg Queen, after finding her, Agnes’ newfound strength makes for an easy escape. In a flashback, Raffi talks with Elnor and convinces him to stay in the Academy, she blames herself for his death. To be honest, I had completely forgotten that one of the main plot points was getting Elnor back, since he has not been brought up in a while.

Back in La Sirena, the smitten Cristóbal is bonding with Teresa and Ricardo. Teresa talks about her former husband, and how that relationship affected her views on love. As she sees how well he is with her son, Teresa kisses Cristóbal. However, despite the happy moment, Ríos discovers that La Sirena’s transporters are being hijacked, presumably by the Queen herself.

Meanwhile, Kore is still trying to figure out what her father’s secrets were, and with an appearance by Q, she seems to be getting closer to the truth, as she discovers a human genome with her name on them, thus further speculating that she is indeed a clone. She finally confronts him, he reveals that she is his proudest experiment. Kore goes out to the sun, revealing she took the antidote that Q left her. A distraught Dr. Soon is visited by Agnes soon after, where she convinces him to help her, by saying that he will be the savior of humanity. He provides her with humans to start assimilating, getting stronger and making her control over the world inevitable.

By the time Picard reunites with Raffi and Seven, they realize that Agnes/Borg Queen wants La Sirena to be able to get even more ahead with her assimilation process. Thus the little ship that could, must be defended.

We have two episodes left, and again, it feels like there is a lot going on that needs to be resolved and there are also things that have been completely forgotten. Like Elnor and Soji/Kore, it feels as if they were brought back because they were reminded of their existence. Despite criticizing their absences before, the story has been able to move on quite well without them, which is disappointing considering how important they were in season one. Hopefully they end up being key players in the end. Due to the announcement of the return of all the original members of Star Trek: The Next Generation, is it possible that all of this is set up to say farewell to La Sirena crew?

Rating: 3.5 out of 5
