New to Netflix in May, there are many movies and shows to stream. Here are the top five that we simply cannot wait to watch.
5 New To Netflix In May Movies & Shows We Can’t Wait To Watch
April showers bring May flowers in the form of new content to stream on Netflix, and we can’t wait to dive into all that the streaming platform has to bring.
From fan-favorite series to hold-your-breath films and documentaries, there’s a little bit of everything coming next month. Here are just five movies and shows that we’re looking forward to binging.
Stranger Things season 4 vol. 1 (May 27)
It’s almost time to head back to the Upside Down, and the first half of the penultimate season promises to be filled with a lot of strange…things. Based on the trailers, Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) is living with the Byers and struggling to adjust to normal high school life. She also lost her powers, but still remains the key in humanity’s victory. Max (Sadie Sink) is grieving the loss of her brother, Billy (Dacre Montgomery), who sacrificed himself last season. But it also seems like she gets some powers herself, as she’s seen floating in a cemetery one day.
Elsewhere, Hopper (David Harbour) is alive but certainly not well as he’s being held captive by Russians who seem to be conducting experiments. Those who remain in Hawkins are “very much in the eye of the storm.” And by the looks of the new antagonist, Vecna, it doesn’t seem like our heroes will have an easy-breezy school year.
Love, Death, Robots volume 3 (May 20)
The animated anthology series, or Netflix “problem child” as it likes to refer to itself, returns next month. If you haven’t watched the series before, each episode (typically less than 20 minutes long) stands on its own and has a sci-fi, horror, comedy and/or drama flair to it.
Different animators are in charge of an episode, which means you get to explore a wide array of animation styles and stories. I can’t guarantee that you won’t roll your eyes at some of these stories – the humor might be more suited for a teenage boy sometimes – but there are episodes and concepts that stand out in a number of ways.
Hold Your Breath: The Ice Dive (May 3)
I dare you not to get chills after watching the trailer for the Netflix documentary “Hold Your Breath: The Ice Dive.” In this film, Finnish free diver Johanna Nordblad attempts to break the world record for distance traveled under ice with one breath.
It’s hard to imagine just how cold that water is, but one of the people in the documentary says that the distance Nordblad wants to swim is enough to give her hypothermia. But even with the dangers that this attempt poses, the views underwater look so peaceful.
Operation Mincemeat (May 11)
This is one story that you need to see to believe. During World War II, when it seemed like Europe was on the cusp of a grim outcome, two Naval Intelligence officers Ewen Montagu (Colin Firth) and Charles Cholmondeley (Matthew Macfadyen) decided to trick Adolf Hitler and the Nazis from the Allied invasion of Sicily in 1943 by planting documents outlining a false landing in Greece on a corpse posing as a Royal Marine courier.
The corpse was then supposed to wash up on shore in Spain, where the Nazis would find the documents and hopefully believe the lie. But a lot could have gone wrong with the plan: What if the Germans found that drowning wasn’t the corpse’s cause of death? What if the briefcase was returned to the Allies without the Germans seeing the documents? We’ll just have to watch and see this real-life spy thriller unfold when it drops on Netflix.
“The Pentaverate” (May 5)
How many Mike Myers characters could one have in a limited series? Apparently eight. The comedian stars in this new limited series where a Canadian journalist (one of his personas) attempts to uncover the truth behind a secret society of five men (each played by Myers), known as the Pentaverate, who have been influencing world events for the greater good since the 14th century.
This series looks to have ties to Myers’ 1993 film “So I Married An Axe Murderer,” where his character Stuart talks about the Pentaverate “who run everything in the world.” The trailer promises big laughs and wild stories with a cast that also includes Ken Jeong, Keegan-Michael Key, Debi Mazar, Richard McCabe, Jennifer Saunders and Lydia West.
