Jenna Ortega joins an iconic horror franchise in Scream (2022) and in this exclusive interview she discusses doing so, as well as Ghostface!
The wait is over! Ghostface is back! The fifth installment of the classic horror franchise, Scream (2022), is hitting theaters on January 14. The film happens twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro. A new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past.
The iconic roles played by Neve Campbell as “Sidney Prescott”, Courteney Cox as“Gale Weathers”, and David Arquette as “Dewey Riley” return in Scream alongside Melissa Barrera, Kyle Gallner, Jenna Ortega, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, Dylan Minnette, Jack Quaid, Marley Shelton, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Sonia Ammar.
American actress Jenna Ortega, daughter of mixed Mexican and Puerto Rican parents, plays Tara Carpenter in this film. I had the opportunity to chat with her about her new role.
For Ortega, it’s “unbelievable” to be part of this franchise and she never thought this opportunity would come on her way.

The Latina actress also explained how they filmed the phone scene, which you can see on the movie’s trailer and said “we were shooting in Wilmington, North Carolina and Roger was calling in from Los Angeles so we would speak to him through the actual landline that we were filming. It was funny we would try to entertain him in between takes. It’s just casual conversations and he would jump into different voices from different characters he’s played before but prepping for that scene was really nerve-wracking”.
The 19-year-old actress was not even born when the first three films were released. However, she was “a big scary cat” when she was younger when it comes to movies. Scream (1996) was one of the first horror films she was brave enough to watch — and she saw it when she was 14 years old.
When I asked her if she would pick any of the actress from this movie’s cast to be the Ghostface, Ortega hesitated a little.
“I’m so scared to answer this question because I don’t want to say… you know how audience twist and my words, and I don’t know, but I want to say Sonia with her pink hair and intimidating face… I don’t know when someone’s so striking like that…” – Jenna Ortega
By the way, her favorite slasher movie is Prom Night just because “that’s also unidentified mysterious killer that people know but you don’t know who it is and that kind of makes them more intimidating”.
