In honor of Scream (2022) releasing in theaters everywhere this weekend, here is a ranking of all 5 Scream movies from worst to best.
All 5 Scream Movies Ranked — From Worst To Best
Scream is one of the most iconic franchises to ever grace the silver screen and horror fan’s hearts. As for me I have been a lover of horror since I was a kid, but Scream was the one franchise I didn’t get into until recently. Thankfully I did as now I love this franchise and with the new Scream (2022) or Scream 5 coming out this weekend I thought it would be fun to dive in and give my ranking for all 5 SCREAM Movies From Worst To Best.
WARNING: Spoilers for all 5 SCREAM Movies!
5. Scream 3
To say Scream 3 is the weakest is just a show of strength for how great this horror franchise truly is. Scream 3 is good, not bad nor great. It has cameo’s from Jay and Silent Bob! Plus even Carrie Fisher! Lots of fun to be had as most of this film takes place in Hollywood and even provides some of the most META commentary yet — but with that commentary it might be the weakest of the bunch.
Alongside Sidney Prescott not really being the lead this time around due to some scheduling conflicts… The entire premise of Ghostface coming back out to kill people makes sense in context but the reveal itself and the reasoning I found to be the weakest as it’s like really A HALF BROTHER? As well the pacing is not the best. Still some fun to be had but easily the weakest of the bunch.
4. Scream 2
Scream 2 came out a year after the original Scream and what a wild fun ride it was. Expanding on our characters and their PTSD trials they might have had after the events of the first. We follow Sidney goes to College and Ghostface returns this time around to cause more pain.
Randy’s death is one of the saddest and most subtle of the entire franchise leaving a lasting mark on this movie in a good way. I find Scream 2 to be a great sequel to a film that had no way of surpassing. Doubling down on its commentary on what makes a horror sequel better than others. Wes went bigger, bloodier, weirder, and overall crazier with this one.
3. Scream 4
The legacy sequel before all the others. Wes Craven returns to the original town where all this madness had started. Bringing in wonderful new characters and of course our favorites. This film succeeds in commentating the horror franchise in the 2010’s, as well going as bloody as we’ve ever seen this franchise go.
Scream 4 each kill goes more gory than the last. Leaving this sense of dread that I haven’t felt in a scream film yet. This one felt the most visceral of all the films to date, while still containing that cynical sarcastic outlook on horror. It was way ahead of its time and besides feeling a tad dragged out towards the third act I love this movie.
2. Scream (2022)
Scream (2022) or Scream 5 is straight up a meta commentary on toxic fanbases and legacy sequels, making this a perfect legacy sequel for Scream fans to enjoy. It commentates on how horror films are today. Every month it seems a new elevated horror film comes out in theaters and splits the audience.
Scream 5 touches on this and even touches on how so many sequels today such as Last Jedi, Jurassic World, and how they split the fan bases into toxic sides. This is why Scream 2022 is brilliant as well as the way it brings new characters to life and makes us love them. Giving just the perfect amount of screen time to our returning heroes.
Besides some minor plot conveniences for Ghostface I find my love of this film to grow more and more as I think about it and I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE THIS FILM AGAIN.

1. SCREAM
The masterpiece that has defined generations to come. Wes Craven reinvented the horror genre with his satire on 90’s horror movies and birthed one of the greatest franchises of all time. The opening kill/intro is still memorable today and set the tone for the rest of this film.
The twist and turns of who the killers are still works. Of course Sidney Prescott is still the iconic badass that is easy to cheer for. The film only gets better on re-watches and continues to be right up my alley. This is what Craven did so well was exploring and blurring the lines between what a horror movie should be and what one really is.
Nothing will ever beat this film.
