DC’s Titans Season 3 is off to a BANG of a start, and there is some serious aftermath from the ending of Episode 3 that needs to be addressed in Episode 4. They have lost another one of their own, after all, and Conner and Dove seem to be the ones who are taking it the hardest, and blaming themselves. At the same time, Gar and Kory track down the source of her blackouts, and Dick takes the Red Hood matters into his own hands.

Warning, this recap and review of Titans Season 3 Episode 4 will contain spoilers. So if you have not yet watched this episode on HBO Max and would like to remain in the dark, please come back at a later time.  If you missed our Titans Season 3 Episode 3 recap, check it out.

Warning: Spoilers Ahead for Titans Season 3 Episode 4.
    Blackfire

This episode starts right off in Arkham Asylum where it seems Red Hood has put out a hit on Dr. Crane, AKA Scarecrow. He is attacked by an orderly while getting his pills for the morning, and only survives because the guards help him out. Barbara Gordon and Gotham PD assume that this is because he has been helping them in regards to Red Hood, and it was a retaliation. Since it might not be safe there, they decide to move him to a safer location, under guard.

Back at the manor, Conner is spending his time cleaning, and Gar tells him that he needs to take a break and at least eat something. Conner expresses that he has failed in saving Hank, and that Superman never would have failed. He goes on to say that this is the Lex Luthor part of him, and even snarks at Gar about how he is just a talking green tiger. This is clearly the aftermath of his guilt and anger over losing Hank.

Dawn comes into the kitchen and tries to explain that it is her fault, and she pulled the trigger killing Hank — which is the truth in all actuality. She says goodbye to everyone and Dick brings her to a plane, where she says she is heading to her family’s home in Paris. She also explains that Bruce has hung up the cape, and Hank wanted to, and perhaps this is a sign. She knows there is a way out, they just need to find it.

    Dick Grayson Abducts Dr. Crane

After they say their goodbyes, Dick gets a call from Barbara who explains to him what happened with Scarecrow. He takes off from the airport, and ends up at Arkham for Scarecrow’s transfer, taking out the guards and making Scarecrow go with him to an unknown location. As they pull away we see Red Hood, who is sure to follow them.

When they get where they are going — a remote cabin in the woods where Bruce trained Dick, as well as Jason Todd, he says he knows that Dr. Crane is the one that got to Jason, and made him who he is now. The hit attempt was a ploy so that a prison transfer would be initiated and he could be saved by his new protégé. Dr. Crane all but confesses, but explains that he didn’t break Jason, he put him back together. Dick’s plan is to lure Red Hood out to the cabin, and deal with him there.

    Starfire & Gar Find Blackfire

Meanwhile, Starfire has another episode and shoots fire at Gar, which causes him to be completely fed up with her. When she explains what is going on, he brings her to Bruce’s isolation chamber, hoping it can help her focus. Instead, she has another episode, breaks out, throws him in the trunk of the car, and drives to the middle of a field.

It doesn’t take long for Gar to realize what is going on though, the car was parked over a hatch in the ground that, of course, they decide to explore. What they discover is a secret government facility underground that is designed to hold one prisoner — Starfire’s sister, Blackfire. There is one man running the place, and he is a big fan of Starfire and Beast Boy, and was excited to meet them.

The cell that she is in was created to dampen her powers, and Starfire goes in just to talk to her. Of course the two end up quarrelling and then doing some hand to hand combat, before Starfire walks out, saying she is going to leave her there. The man running the place explains that Blackfire will be locked in there for hundreds of years, until she dies.

Starfire ends up feeling really bad about this, and decides to break her out. Which is just about as easy as you would think with just one man trying to stand in her way. Blackfire, Starfire, and Beast Boy leave together — presumably to head back to the Titans.

    An Escape

Red Hood shows up at the remote cabin just as Dick expected he would. The two fight in the woods in a pretty amazing action sequence, before Gotham PD shows up. Barbara orders them to shoot if they have a clear shot and when they do, it knocks both Dick and Jason to the ground. When Dick looks around, Red Hood is already gone… and when he gets to the cabin… so is Scarecrow.

Titans Season 3 Episode 4 Review

Titans Season 3 Episode 4 does a decent job of setting a lot up for the future. Dick has figured out who has been mentoring Jason, and while the exactly how he survived, or came back to life, and how he became Red Hood hasn’t been revealed yet, it should be soon. Scarecrow and him are together in the outside world now, which is sure to create some issues for the Titans, and chaos for Gotham.

This episode also sees Backfire brought back, and since she is confirmed to be a series regular, fans are sure to see a lot more of her. Dawn has left, which makes sense because with Hank gone, she should be too. At least for a little while. It is up in the air on if she will return or not, but likely it will not happen this season. Conner is really down on himself about Hank and it will be interesting to see where that goes this season, as well as if and when he gets over it.

There are still some moments of cheesy dialogue in this episode, but they seem to be getting few and far between which is a very good thing. The fight choreography is also stepping it up with both big action scenes in this episode truly delivering.

Biggest issue for this episode is that there was not enough Red Hood, but there was a lot of great Scarecrow stuff, so it can be forgiven.
