The Expanse is finally coming back with season 5 and I don’t know about you, but with how season 4 ended, I have been waiting for this season to come! Lucky for us, the time is almost here. I have said this before and I will say it again, The Expanse is one of the best sci-fi television shows of all time. In fact, this series inspired me to purchase the books. However, I have waited to read them, because I don’t want them to spoil the show.

The Expanse Season 5 Episode 1: Exodus
Synopsis:
Holden tries to convince Fred Johnson to destroy the last sample of the protomolecule. Naomi gets an important lead to her son. On Luna, Avasarala begins to hunt for Marco Inaros.
Review:
This episode did a great job of getting me excited for some of my favorite sci-fi characters, and their journeys, again. We learn right away that they are split up, and honestly, this made me really excited. I just felt like we would know more about each character with them going off on their own, if even for a little bit.
The fact that the protomolecule is still in play, but taking a back burner for the moment, allows us to explore other threats to the universe. Avasarala is settling in on Luna, but still very much after Marcos for his past crimes and dirty deeds.
Naomi learning about her son, and opting to go look for him alone, made me love her even more. She is such a strong woman and for her to want to do this on her own, shows guts.
The Expanse Season 5 Episode 2: Churn
Synopsis:
Holden and Fred deal with infiltrators on Tycho. Drummer’s past comes back to haunt her. Amos returns to Baltimore. Alex and Bobbie’s investigation on Mars leads to rogue soldiers.
Review:
Episode two is a great one for all of our characters, but specifically for Amos. I feel like we learn a lot about him and his past, and in turn we have a greater appreciation for him as a character. Of course I was already a massive fan of his but after this episode, I honestly respect him more as a human, even though he doesn’t always make the best choices.
I also really enjoyed seeing Bobbie and Alex work together more. Their relationship makes me giggle, and I kind of adore them both. There are also some laugh out loud moments between Holden and Fred. In Churn, we learn a bit more about Drummer as her past comes back to haunt her, and some parts made me really, really miss Ashford.
The Expanse Season 5 Episode 3: Mother
Synopsis:
Naomi comes face to face with Filip. Holden and Fred turn the tables. Avasarala closes in on Marco’s plot.
Review:
Episode three is honestly one of my favorites of the entire season. It feels like there is so much going on in each of our character’s lives. There is a lot of action in this episode, and some moments where you will certainly be holding your breath and sitting on the edge of your seat.
Not to mention, all the cliffhangers it leaves us with. It certainly made sense for them to release the first three episodes of The Expanse season 5 together, and then make everyone wait with baited breath a week for more.
The Expanse Season 5 First 3 Episodes Overall Thoughts
These first three episodes do a fantastic job of bringing us back into the world of The Expanse. They not only set up what is likely to be an amazing season, they separate our favorite characters so that they all seem to be going on their own journey. I personally love this because I feel like we get to know them all on a deeper level than we have so far in the series, especially Amos.
About The Expanse Season 5
Season five of the series picks up as multitudes of humans leave the solar system in search of new homes and vast fortunes on the earth-like worlds beyond the alien Ring, and a heavy price for centuries of exploitation of the Belt finally comes due and a reckoning is at hand.
For the crew of the Rocinante and the leaders of the Inner Planets and the Belt, the past and present converge, bringing forth personal challenges that have wide-reaching repercussions throughout the Solar System. Amos (Wes Chatham) returns to Earth to confront his past and the legacy of the life he fought to leave behind. Naomi (Dominique Tipper) reaches out to her estranged son in a desperate bid to save him from his father’s toxic influence.
Bobbie (Frankie Adams) and Alex (Cas Anvar) confront the collapse of Mars as they chase a shadowy cabal with ties to terrorists and criminals. Holden (Steven Strait) wrestles with the consequences of his own past with the Protomolecule, the aliens who built it, and the mystery of what killed them.
Drummer (Cara Gee), with a new crew, fights to escape who and what she used to be. And Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo), refusing to be relegated to the sidelines, fights to prevent a terrorist attack unrivaled in history.
The first 3 episodes of The Expanse Season 5 drop on Amazon Prime Video December 16th.

I guess you haven’t seen the rest of the episodes, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 . Writers now have a tendency of milking storylines and making all these characters devolve from seasons 1-4. It seems they all have mommy issues, son issues, relationships issues… and to make matters worst, lot’s of crying in all these episodes. Amos, Chrisjen, Bobbie and Alex at least have their characters solid. Milk it. THe Expanse bloated into melodrama, this season can be edited to less than half the ten episodes. I found myself fast fowarding all the crying with Naomi and Philip’s mommy issues, Camina do I drink or don’t drink, and then more crying of helpless poor Naomi. Jeezz. call the season, Naomi decides to test how many tears she can shed to get into This is Us and compete with Sterling K. Brown for who cries the most.
