Netflix’s Ratched is a dark thriller type show with some serious American Horror Story vibes. Sarah Paulson kills the iconic role, no pun intended.
Ratched is an episode show that is coming to Netflix on September 18th and I really hope this is the stoart of a long series. I was instantly hooked — and each episode just gets better and better. The story follows Sarah Paulson, who plays Nurse Ratched, as she gets a job at a Mental Asylum. She goes on to treat patients, but is there for one in particular — Edmund Tolleson. He is in the asylum after committing several murders.
Now, this is the prequel — the origin story if you will – for Nurse Ratched, who is a character from the movie One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. A movie which I had not watched until after watching season one of this series (I know, I know). I am not exageratting when I tell you that I could not stop watching this show. I went from episode to episode, finishing it all in less than a day. I was so eager to see what happens next.
There are characters that you will love to hate, and hate to love — and likely your opinion of them will change as the show goes on. It seems like every person in this show has at least one deep, dark, secret. And seeing them all exposed one by one was captivating. I could not stop trying to put certain pieces together. Some scenes were like a
This was a very quick binge watch for me and when it came to an end, I was bummed. Ratched episode eight ended with a set up for a second season that I really hope we get. Knowing now where One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest starts, there is a lot of things that can be explored in Nurse Ratched’s life along the way. Things I want to be a witness to.
Serious American Horror Story Vibes
Ratched gives off serious American Horror Story vibes which honestly, is to be expected. Not only is it from the same creator, Ryan Murphy, they also both star Sarah Paulson. There is a chilling opening credit scene, which is similar to those that are in AHS episodes.
The cinematography is on point, and there were often times where the ambiance of a scene would completely engulf me. I felt like I was in the room watching a murder, or these horrific “medical treatments”. Often it was like a train wreck. Something that I just could not look away from, even if I wanted to.
Sarah Paulson Is Everything
Nurse Ratched is an iconic character and I can only imagine how intimidating it was for Sarah to step into that role. She has some big shoes to fill but boy does she do it. The way you can look into her eyes and see the disconnect, see the crazy, is eerie. It isn’t all the time but when you catch a glimpse of it, it will send shivers up and down your spin.
Sarah is a very talented actress and it seems she was born to play this role. She does a fantastic job of portraying Nurse Ratched and I hope we see her continue it for many more seasons to come.
Do You Need To Have Seen One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest?
The answer to this is a big fat no. In fact, I had not watched One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest until after watching Ratched. If nothing else, watching Ratched will make you want to see One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest to get a little more insight into this character.
I have had many people ask me if the character of Nurse Ratched is ruined. In my opinion the answer is absolutely not. If anything, I feel like I know so much more about her now. And her character in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest is that much more creepy, knowing her background.
Ratched is the dark and twisted tale of how Nurse Ratched became the character that she is in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. Sarah Paulson does a fantastic job taking on the iconic role, and is just as creepy as Louise Fletcher.
The show itself brings the American Horror Story vibes, which is to be expected given its creator and lead actress. There are murders, inhumane treatment of patients, and a lot of secrets. Ratched is only eight, one hour episodes, and they fly by. It is more than binge-worthy and I highly recommend it for those that enjoy this sort of thing.
I have been watching a lot of Netflix lately and honestly, Ratched is one of my favorites. Netflix has a lot of great series and I hope this is one that will continue for a long time, filling in the gaps before One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.
