Chatting with the Stars of Disney’s Adventures In Babysitting: Sabrina Carpenter & Sofia Carson

While in LA this past April I was lucky enough to screen Disney’s 100th Original Movie – Adventures In Babysitting. I loved the original from the 1980’s, which this movie is based off of, so I was really excited to be one of the first to see it. I must say, I really enjoyed it! There was a lot of laughing, a lot of nail biting action, and even a few heart warming moments. I do not want to give anything away but I will say be sure to tune in when it airs on The Disney Channel on June 24th. That just so happens to be my daughter’s 5th birthday and she is a HUGE Evie fan (Sofia Carson’s character in Descendants) so I know we will be tuning in. What a great birthday present for her!

I also got to chat with the stars of the movie – the babysitters themselves – Sabrina Carpenter and Sofia Carson! They are both so sweet and instantly lit up the room when they walked in. We had all just watched the movie and so we were ready (and excited!) to get to talk with them. Don’t worry, I edited out anything that could be a spoiler – I want you guys to experience the movie as I did with fresh eyes. These girls were an absolute pleasure to talk to – and I think they genuinely enjoyed talking with us as well. They are so humble and down to Earth. I really enjoyed my time with them.

They immediately raved about their cast mates. Sabrina started by saying “The five kids are some of the most talented we’ve ever met. They were so professional and such a joy to work with. I wish I could babysit them.” I could tell how much she really enjoyed her time on set and that was confirmed when Sofia explained further.

We all became a family. We had little parties every weekend – singing and dancing and improve games. We had the greatest time.” When asked to tell us something they like about each other Sabrina said that Sofia is not that funny at all. Sofia fully knows that and admitted it to us. They both giggled as Sabrina let Sofia know that with a script, she funny and “if she had writers with her all the time, she’d be so funny“. Sofia added “Sabrina is probably the funniest person you will ever meet. She doesn’t need a script.

Being in the presence of these girls made me feel a little old. I remember watching the original Adventures in Babysitting when I was younger – and we asked them if they had seen it before they knew about this version. We learned that Disney came to them together and they actually auditioned together – they were even the first to read for the roles!

I did see the movie. I was a big fan of the movie. My mom was a big fan of the movie. So to be able to create a new version of such a classic beloved tale for this new generation is something I was honored to do. Apparently I have a thing with squeals and remakes (referring to Girl Meets World).” Sabrina answered.

When you see the movie, you will notice there are quite a bit of stunts. We asked how many of the stunts they got to do themselves and Sofia got to do all of them. Sabrina was a minor at the time, so the most she got to do was pretend to drive.

I don’t drive. We have a lot of bloopers of me in the car because I can’t drive. There definitely will be bloopers on the DVD.” she added. We then learned that poor Sofia actually got hurt doing one of her stunts and has a scar on her knee to prove it. “Can I mention it was the lamest stunt of the whole movie that I hurt myself. We ran in the rain the whole movie, I was in a factory hanging 20 feet in the air – I did all of that. But when they asked me to run and walk, I fell. It is the first scene in the movie – Lola is running late. It was actually the last week of shooting. They had just wet the pavement to make it look nice on camera and I wasn’t wearing shoes with rubber soles. I had to run down the hill pretty quickly, jump over [bushes] and then the second I hit the pavement, I just wiped out. But now I get to say I fell doing a stunt.

Since this movie all about adventures in babysitting, we asked if either of the girls had funny stories from a babysitting experience.

I would babysit my little cousins. But they were such good kids, I have no stories. We got ice cream – I got chocolate, they got strawberry. They went to sleep. It was very easy. Nothing like we experienced in this movie. There were no ferrets involved what so ever.” Sofia answered. Sabrina did have a story to tell us though, “I never babysat but once I locked a babysitter out of the house because I didn’t really like her. I mean, it was me and my two older sisters. They were older, they probably could have babysat me anyways. She wasn’t a great babysitter because she brought over her boyfriend and I was like – we don’t know this person. He was really really nice but still it was like – you guys can go outside. We just played piano inside for a couple hours.” Sofia added that her character Lola is the kind of girl that “totally would have brought her boyfriend to babysit“.

When asked about their favorite scenes in the movie, they both had great answers. The two they picked are actually two of my favorite scenes.

“Besides where we first meet – which shows the dynamic of these two new babysitters and gets you ready for the adventure that you’re about to go on – and the rap battle, which is really fun – I love the simple bathroom makeover scene for Jenny. Its a time where she isn’t getting a full makeover, just kind of letting her hair down so she can be a little bit more adventurous like Lola. It shows what shes taken form this whole adventure that they had together and shes more confident than she was before.” Sofia went with one of the funniest scenes in the movie. “I love the rap battle scene. Me and Sabrina got to be rappers for the first time in our lives. It was such a fun scene to shoot. It was so high energy, the music was awesome – the energy in the club was great. The kids were so cute and hysterical. We had a great shoot.

Of course we had to ask them if they were more of a Lola or a Jenny. They both answered that they are an in between.

Lola is really cool, brave, free spirited, young girl who isn’t afraid to just live life despite consequences of sometimes making irresponsible decisions. She is very passionate about her art and a very strong girl. I am also very passionate – I think we both are – about what we do. About our music and acting. We’re both also independent with strong incredible moms and they taught us to be strong girls – and represent girl power. Lola and Jenny are both like that – because Jenny, even though she is more inside the box is still a strong powerful girl. They both saved the day together.” Sofia explained.

Sofia and Sabrina are both clearly role models for young girls. When asked how they felt about this they immediately said it was an honor to hear themselves called role models coming from us mommy bloggers.

Sofia went on to say “It is an honor to be able to be in a position where we can influence young girls. It’s a big responsibility, but its a beautiful responsibility because as we were growing up we looked up to actors and singers to be our role models as well. And their voice and what they stand for always influenced us so much. I think we are very lucky to be able to tell stories like Jenny and Lolas story – like Evies story , like Girl Meets World. Who represent Girl Power because girls can take over the world. I think its important that girls know that and that we remind them of that. So it is an honor to be able to share these stories with them.”

Sabrina continued with “Since Sofia and I both had such big dreams and aspirations as to what we wanted to do. the fact that we have been able to figure out those dreams and love what we do everyday is hopefully an inspiration to girls everywhere (and boys) to figure out what they want to do  – and make sure that whatever they do in life they love so they don’t have to work a day in their life.

They are both very well spoken young women – and clearly have some great role models in their lives. My heart was touched when they both mentioned their moms when asked who they were.

My role model has always been my mom. She is the most incredible woman in the world – most incredible woman I know and I always strive to be just a little bit like her every day. Even just 10% of what she is that would be enough – she is truly my hero.” Sofia explained. Sabrina told us “My mom and dad and my older sisters – my whole family – the Carpenter bunch is kind of a special bunch. I think that my parents always stressed in my head that I was unique and that I was special and that I was different and that I could do whatever I put my mind to. Those are the type of people that you want to have in your life forever and I am lucky to call them family.

Things certainly have changed since I was a kid. I grew up watching Boy Meets World and the most I could do was write a letter to my favorite actor (Rider Strong). He did send an “autographed” postcard back to me (that I still have) so that is a win – but now you can tweet at your role models and get responses from them almost instantly. Social media is really amazing and has changed what it means to be a celebrity. When we asked the girls about how they feel about this. their answers touched me.

Sofia explained “It’s really one of my favorite parts of our job, apart form doing what we love every day. We get to feel and share so much love with your daughters and your sons. It really means the world to us to know they take the time out of their day to make photos for us and make videos for us. When we meet them, they get emotional, and I almost always get very emotional too. It’s still surreal to me that someone can look up to you and care about you so much and you can feel the same way about them. Social media is the best way to stay connected to them. I really feel like we can talk to them directly and they can talk to us directly. It was my birthday and the amount of love I received from all of my fans was so beautiful and it made me feel so loved and I just hope to give it all back to them. We are here because of them.

You guys control obviously what your kids watch and what you want your kids to take in – so the fact that you have chosen to watch Descendants, Girl Meets World, and hopefully Adventures in Babysitting – that means the world to us. And to be able to have such an instant interaction with social media now a days is really special. The fact that you could make someone’s day and you don’t even know them – or you could get to know them that quickly – is wonderful and it’s nice to have that instant connection.” Sabrina added.

About Adventures in Babysitting

“Adventures in Babysitting” brings together two unlikely friends when a tedious evening for contentious babysitters, Jenny Parker (Sabrina Carpenter) and Lola Perez (Sofia Carson), turns into an exciting journey in the big city as they hunt for one of the kids who somehow snuck away. The story unfolds when Jenny and Lola, two girls with distinctly different personalities, both interview for a coveted internship opportunity and accidentally swap phones. In need of extra cash, audacious Lola nominates herself when the Andersons call Jenny looking for a last-minute babysitter.

Meanwhile, dependable Jenny is already set to babysit the Cooper family for the evening. Lola’s first attempt at babysitting takes an unforeseen turn after Jenny discovers what Lola has done, and Jenny takes the kids to the Andersons to help rectify the situation. However, this leads all of them on an unexpected and exciting adventure of a lifetime.
