Vince Vaughn and James Marsden team up for a gory, time-traveling gangster epic that’s equal parts hilarious and chaotic. Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice is an absolute blast.

On paper, Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice sounds like a hard-R gangster flick mixed with a love triangle, but it also sprinkles in some sci-fi time-travel logic, which makes for a bold swing. Thankfully, it’s a swing that connects. This movie is a total blast. It is a stylized, high-octane action-comedy that manages to feel fresh even when it’s playing with familiar tropes.
The secret sauce here is undoubtedly the chemistry between Vince Vaughn and James Marsden. We know Vaughn’s brand by now – the rapid-fire delivery, the dry wit, the everyman in over his head energy – and it works perfectly here as Nick.
But pairing him with Marsden’s Quick Draw Mike was a stroke of genius. Marsden has incredible comedic timing that often goes underappreciated, and seeing the two of them bounce off each other while navigating a crumbling criminal underworld is where the movie finds itself.
Then you have Eiza González as Alice, the woman caught in the middle. The love triangle trope can often feel forced or like a distraction from the action, but here, it adds a layer of chaotic fun that raises the stakes. While I would have loved to have her do a little bit more here, there are plot points in play that keep her from getting into too much of the action at times. Which is understandable.
You probably know that I am a sucker for wild kills in action cinema. While I’ll admit that a few sequences felt a little more restrained than I expected for an R-rating, the sheer volume of action more than makes up for it. When the movie decides to go there, it really goes there.
There are a handful of moments that deliver that visceral, gory punch I was looking for. Without spoiling the specifics, the way the film integrates time travel into the combat leads to some truly unforgettable action sequences.
I can’t talk about Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice without giving a massive shoutout to the legendary Keith David. As Sosa, the head of the crime organization, he is pure gold. There is something about his voice – that deep, authoritative rumble – that makes him the perfect choice for a mob boss. Plus, you can tell he’s having the time of his life playing someone so cold-hearted and ruthless.
On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, you have Jimmy Tatro as Jimmy Boy. Tatro has mastered the art of playing the lovable idiot, and his presence provides some of the biggest laughs in the film, acting as the perfect comedic foil to the high-stakes tension.
What surprised me most, however, was the emotional core. While the plot follows a somewhat predictable path – you can usually see the betrayals coming from a mile away -there are a few genuine surprises that caught me off guard. There were even some touching moments between our leads that felt earned. I didn’t quite shed a tear, but I’ll be honest: I got close. It’s rare for a movie this violent and absurd to actually make you care about whether the characters make it to the sunrise, but this one pulled it off.
The ending of Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice leaves the door cracked open for more. If they announced a sequel tomorrow, I’d be first in line. Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice is a unique, hilarious, and bloody good time that proves you can mix genres – as long as you have a cast that’s game for the ride.
