Zootopia 2‘s Yvette Nicole Brown, Byron Howard, and Yvett Merino talk about record-breaking success, Easter Eggs, and Zootopia 3 tease.
Zootopia 2 has officially become the highest grossing domestic release of 2025, and now fans can bring the record-breaking Disney animated sequel home. Currently available on digital and arriving on Disney+ March 11, the beloved follow-up continues to dominate both at the box office and beyond.
Mama’s Geeky’s Tessa Smith sat down with director Byron Howard, producer Yvett Merino, and Yvette Nicole Brown, who voices two characters in the film, to talk about the sequel’s massive success, hidden Easter eggs, and what could come next for Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde.
Zootopia 2 Record-Breaking Surprises Filmmakers

Even the filmmakers admit they didn’t expect the sequel to soar quite this high.
“We hoped we could deliver something as good or better than the first film,” Merino explained. “We knew the audience was out there wanting it… but to see people return to theaters multiple times around the world has been remarkable.”
Howard echoed the sentiment, noting that while there was always love for the original Zootopia, sequels come with added pressure. Nearly ten years after the first film debuted, Zootopia 2 not only met expectations — it shattered them, climbing to the top spot as 2025’s biggest domestic release.
With the film now available on digital, Howard pointed out that audiences can finally pause and catch the incredible level of detail the animation team packed into every frame.
“Our crew put so much dense, amazing detail work into the film,” he said. “Now you can kind of pause it and see that magic on screen for yourself.”
Hidden Easter Eggs and Fan-Favorite Moments
Disney Animation is famous for its Easter eggs, and Zootopia 2 is no exception. From blink-and-you’ll-miss-it background gags to a tricky-to-spot Stray Kids reference during a car chase, the sequel is packed with surprises. Some Easter eggs were planned from the start — like a Ratatouille nod — while others were added organically by artists during production.
“It’s always fun,” Merino shared. “We discover them along the way.” The digital release makes it easier than ever for fans to hunt down those hidden details.
Expanding the World of Zootopia

One of the biggest additions in Zootopia 2 is Gary De’Snake, voiced by Ke Huy Quan. The introduction of reptiles marks a major expansion of the franchise’s world-building. Howard explained that reptiles were discussed during the first film but ultimately didn’t fit within its storytelling boundaries. For the sequel, however, it was the perfect time to broaden the universe.
“Zootopia is one huge city on a huge continent on a world full of animals,” Howard said. “Any animal that exists on Earth could be featured.”
Producer Yvett Merino admitted she was initially hesitant about adding a snake.
“I am terrified of them,” she laughed. “But Gary became one of my favorite new characters.”
The sequel’s themes of inclusion, differences, and understanding resonate strongly through Gary’s storyline, reinforcing the franchise’s core message about not limiting yourself — or others.
Judy and Nick: Soulmates or Something More?

Of course, fans are still passionately debating Judy and Nick’s relationship status. When asked about the film’s playful “fake baby” moment, the filmmakers acknowledged the wink to audiences who have long shipped the duo.
“We love that these discussions are happening,” Merino said. “There are very vocal teams on either side.”
Howard added that the heart of the sequel focuses on deepening Judy and Nick’s bond, showing how much they mean to one another while maintaining the friction and humor that makes their partnership so dynamic.
As for Zootopia 3? Nothing is officially confirmed — but the team made it clear they love spending time in this world.
“The possibilities are endless,” Howard teased.
Yvette Nicole Brown on Voicing Two Characters

Yvette Nicole Brown, a longtime Disney fan, was thrilled to join the Zootopia 2 legacy – not once, but twice. She voices both a tiny, energetic otter and the glamorous Baroness in the film. She explained that she used her natural voice for the otter but lowered her register significantly for the Baroness to ensure the two sounded distinct.
For Brown, getting the call from Disney never gets old.
“You’re not supposed to get a call from Disney ever,” she said. “So every time it comes in, I’m always excited.”
She also emphasized how special it feels to be part of a franchise that champions inclusivity and accessibility. “This movie deals with accessibility, ability, and inclusion,” Brown said. “It’s just an inclusive, lovely, diverse world. And I think that’s what we all need.”
After grossing billions worldwide and dominating theaters, Zootopia 2 is now available on digital platforms and will begin streaming on Disney+ March 11.
For families who saw it multiple times in theaters — and for those who missed it — the home release offers a chance to revisit the rich animation, layered humor, and emotional storytelling that made it Disney’s biggest animated hit.
