Mama’s Geeky caught up with Five Nights At Freddy’s filmmakers Jason Blum and Emma Tammi to talk FNAF lore, animatronics, and more.

After years and years of waiting, a Five Nights at Freddy’s movie is finally coming. Fans of the video games have been over the moon, and have reacted wonderfully to the trailers. They want to know which animatronics will make an appearance and how the FNAF lore is changed (if at all). Five Nights At Freddy’s comes to both theaters and the Peacock streaming service on October 27th.

Mama’s Geeky caught up with Five Nights At Freddy’s Producer Jason Blum, and Five Nights At Freddy’s Director Emma Tammi, at New York Comic Con 2023.

From her directorial influences, to favorite pieces of video game lore, director Emma Tammi had a lot to reveal about the new FNAF film. Producer Jason Blum discusses the pressures of making a video game adaptation, as well as the choice that Blumhouse made that most of Hollywood is scared to do.

Jason Blum and Emma Tammi Talk Five Nights At Freddy’s Movie

Mama’s Geeky: What was the key to finding the right animatronics to use from the game to film?

Jason Blum: The key was partnering with The Jim Henson Company who made them and having them be practical, not VFX. Just spending a lot of time and money on making this.

Mama’s Geeky: For the fans of the game, what are you most excited for them to see a side of what I’m most excited about for the fans of the game to see in five nights at Freddy’s?

Jason Blum: Usually when Hollywood makes a movie, they always try to make the movie for the fans, as well as people who aren’t fans, to get more people to see it. We did not do that. We made a movie just for fans. If other people come, that’s great. But we didn’t try to have our cake and eat it too.

Mama’s Geeky: Without giving any spoilers away, what were some of your favorite changes between the game’s lore and the film’s lore?

Jason Blum: I can’t say. You have got to see the movie for that.

Mama’s Geeky: Is there anything you can tell us about M3GAN 2?

Jason Blum: M3GAN 2. She’s gonna be back and stronger than ever. I’m as excited as the fans to see it!

Mama’s Geeky: As a director of the film, what were some of your horror, thriller movie inspirations for your directorial input?

Emma Tammi: Oh, there were so many. Especially visual references. I think in terms of the tone, IT was very inspiring for both the color palette, and all the ways in which it twisted something that’s supposed to be fun for children, totally terrified and incorporating the story.

Mama’s Geeky: So the animatronics look absolutely amazing in the trailers. How was the experience of directing the puppeteering and stuff like that on set?

Emma Tammi: It was so fun. I had never done it before. So it was a totally new challenge. One of my favorite things about directing is collaborating with actors and this felt like a whole other team of cast. For Foxy, we had eight different puppeteers operating him. On top of that, there was someone at the light board controlling the light in the eyes. It was a massive collaboration to get these characters up and running.

Mama’s Geeky: And what was it specifically about this film that you were like, “I have to be the director of this.”

Emma Tammi: I started playing the games and immediately, like, loved the world. I was totally freaked out, but also it felt really familiar and nostalgic and because of that, I think it felt like immediately personal to me. So I was, I was really, really excited to take it on.

Mama’s Geeky: What are you most excited for the fans of the game to see this film?

Emma Tammi: There’s so much. Actually, I can’t wait to watch it with fans because I think they’ll talk through a lot of it, which I’m actually really excited about. There’s some cameos that haven’t been revealed. The Easter eggs. I think elements of the lore will be something they want to chat about. So really everything.
