How Hocus Pocus 2 Costumes Connect To Wicca

Fans might notice that the Sanderson sisters are back — but their original costumes are not. The first Hocus Pocus was 29 years ago and because of this, the costumes are no longer with us. They have either deteriorated beyond use, or are in a museum in Seattle (although not in great shape). During an interview, Director Anne Fletcher explains that meant they needed to start from scratch, and was her chance to change them up, just a little bit.

She admits that at first she thought way outside of the box, and wanted to take a book out of the big superhero movies that completely reimagine the costumes. Ultimately, after conversations with Producer Lynn Harris and Costume Designer Sal Pérez Jr., they decided to stay true to the what the witches’ clothes were in the original Hocus Pocus.

They did however, give the clothes new material and add some symbols that tie them to Wicca.

“The symbols on all three of the witches outfits especially Bette’s mean something. It’s sort of now modern day Wicca but in the 1600s that version of witchcraft which was a tethered to the earth, the ocean, the stars, it’s all tied together and it’s all on her cloak as well as the bird. It’s all reflected in Winifred’s cloak and in Mary’s rings. The three girls also have the symbols, as well as each witch’s color stone in their matching necklaces.”

Lynn Harris adds in that, along with the necklaces, each of the girls costumes mirror the exact color scheme of their respective Sanderson sister.

As for the “Mother Witch”, who is played by Hannah Waddingham, her wardrobe has a lot of influence from iconic pieces of the original movie. Without going in to too much detail, she is the one that gives the witches their identity, and that is heavily reflected in the outfit that she wears, and the symbols on the bird.
