Why Is Avatar Getting A Re-Release To Theaters?

The long awaited sequel to Avatar, Avatar: The Way Of Water, is finally coming to theaters this December. Ahead of this sequel, Avatar is getting a re-release to theaters, for a two week limited engagement. So why is this movie heading back to theaters? Director / Writer / Producer James Cameron himself answers.

“It’s been 12 years since the release, and so basically if you’re under 22 or 23 years of age, it’s very, very unlikely that you’ve seen the film in a movie theater. Which in a way kinda means you haven’t seen the film. We authored the film for the big screen, for the giant screen, in 3D. And now we’ve remastered it in 4K, in high-dynamic range and some 48-frame-per-second sections in the film.” Cameron explains.

He adds that this film is now looking better than it ever has — even back in its initial release in 2009. This means there is a whole new generation of movie-goers that likely never say Avatar in a theater, which is how it was intended to be seen.

James Cameron says “Even if they like the movie on streaming or Blu-ray or however they saw it, they still haven’t really seen the movie the way we intended it to be seen. We just watched the film recently when we finished the whole remastering process, and it kinda blew us away. That’s hard to say with any degree of humility, but I mean, we were really impressed with how the movie looked. Just the physical experience of the film.”

He says that he is excited for those who will experience the movie for the first time in theaters thanks to the Avatar re-release, but he also encourages those who did see it in the theater to come back and do so again, since it has been remastered and looks better than ever.

So even if you have seen Avatar more times than you can count, James Cameron urges you to see it in a way like never before when it re-releases to theaters on September 23rd. This will also help fans prepare for the second Avatar film, Avatar: The Way Of Water, which comes to cinemas December 16th.
