It’s safe to say the Obi-Wan series coming soon to Disney+ is one of the most anticipated series for many Star Wars fans. However, it needs to be successful. Here’s why.
It’s safe to say the Obi-Wan series coming soon to Disney+ is one of the most anticipated series for many Star Wars fans. The recent Boba Fett series had fans divided on the overall pace and story, so Obi-Wan really needs to deliver something unique to the fans.
For years there have been rumors fans would see Ewan McGregor return to play Obi-Wan Kenobi, and in 2019, it became a reality. We are now roughly one month before the release of the first two episodes, and fans are hopeful this show will be successful. The images we have seen and the first teaser trailer gave a sense that this will have that nostalgia and hopefully, some new things to add to the mythos of Star Wars. Hayden Christensen returning to play Darth Vader is the cherry on top –giving fans that feeling that this series will be intense and what we have always wanted from an Obi-Wan story. Fans have been waiting years for this series — and the time is almost upon us.
Obi-Wan Series Expectations
The expectations for the Obi-Wan series are exceptionally high, and maybe that shouldn’t be the case. We shouldn’t have our expectations set to a level that can’t be met, but sadly, it’s up there for many reasons. Chances are the series won’t fail, but Star Wars will be in the wrong place if it does. Disney would have to do many things right to fix the damages caused to the brand if Obi-Wan isn’t successful, especially after The Book of Boba Fett. Disney’s Star Wars has been divisive for some and has caused many different opinions on the franchise’s direction.
The Obi-Wan series doesn’t need to focus solely on the titular character, but don’t push him to the background unless there is a narrative reason. It’s evident nostalgia will be a factor in the series, but fans are hoping that Star Wars doesn’t let that overwhelm the story.
Deborah Chow, who directed two episodes of The Mandalorian, is the director of all the episodes of Obi-Wan. She has delivered some great work over the years working on other series, and we have no doubt she put all of herself into this project. The inquisitors also play a role in the series, adding more tension and storylines that we could see unfold. It makes sense that Vader won’t be the only antagonist, so bringing in these other villains is a big plus.
Star Wars is more than Jedi fighting the Sith, but that form of storytelling because primarily works if we care for what is happening. One concern is that we will only care for Obi-Wan and whatever adventure he goes on. Hopefully the characters we are meeting for the first time, or for the first time in live-action, stand out making it easy for viewers to connect with them. Star Wars needs to expand the franchise, adding more characters for us to love, would be a great plus for Obi-Wan.

As mentioned earlier, The Book Of Boba Fett could have been great but fell short when the series ended somewhat abruptly. The best part of the series wasn’t even Boba Fett, and at times he was pushed to being a background character. While we aren’t exactly sure what went wrong, it felt like Boba Fett’s story couldn’t cover the episodes, so they had to pivot to other characters to fill out the time. If that is indeed what happened, then why even make the show?
Boba Fett worked well as a side character in Mandalorian Season 2, but in his series, not so much. Luckily, The Mandalorian series was a massive success for Disney+ and gave hope that Star Wars could work as a Live-Action TV Series. Seeing one series work and one that didn’t, Obi-Wan needs to be the former, and if it’s the latter, it might be one of the biggest disappointments in the franchise so far.
Hopefully, we will be satisfied when we finish the final episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi. So many things are working towards the series, but it could fall apart. This is a beloved character, but that love alone won’t keep this show afloat. So help us, Obi-Wan Kenobi; you are our only hope.
