Star Trek: Picard season 2 episode 7 dives more into Picard’s childhood, but is a step back from previous episodes this season. Here is a recap and review of Picard 2×7.
Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Picard Season 2 Episode 7
After a Borg Queen possessed Agnes leaves the party and an injured Picard is in a comatose state, the crew has decided to go into his mind to get him back.
Picard finds himself in a 24th-century Starfleet psych evaluation, with a confrontational therapist, pushing to find out who Jean-Luc actually is. It would have been nice to have a cameo from Deanna Troi, since she was his therapist throughout the entirety of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but with the news of her returning for the third and final season of Picard, I’m sure more interactions are to come.
In Picard’s mind, we finally see his mother and realize that she had many problems that Picard manifested as monsters and all he wanted to do was protect her. Tallin goes into his mind to save him, and she sees the monsters that he is facing, but the monsters keep coming and he is afraid. As Tallin tries to save Picard, he is distraught as the monster reveals himself, an older Picard to which young Picard calls “father”. Is Picard’s childhood trauma something to do with his father? Is that why we have never heard any mention of him previously? Is his father responsible for whatever happened to his mother?
Back with Ríos, he has completely fallen head over heels for Teresa, going as far as acting like Captain Kirk in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, revealing that he is from the future and works in a spaceship. Shout out to the line “I’m from Chile, I just work in space” for finally confirming where Ríos is from after having it be a mystery for far too long.
Ríos transports Teresa and Ricardo to La sirena, and he is the happiest he’s ever been during this season. Somehow, this storyline seems to be setting off a farewell of sorts for Ríos, will he give up a life of thrill and action to settle down with Teresa and Ricardo? How will he revealing the truth affect the timeline in the long run?
Meanwhile, Raffi and Seven realize that something is not right with Agnes, they try to find her, and find her last location, a bar where she broke a window. As they try to piece what is happening to Agnes, Seven comes to a cold realization thanks to the broken window, Agnes is becoming the new Borg Queen. The repercussions it will cause can only be imagined.
At the end of the episode, Picard, reeling from what went on in his head, goes back to Guinan for advice. A group of men show up, interested in the conversation, and they soon reveal the footage of Picard beaming into the area, and arrest them.
While this episode delved deeper into Picard’s childhood, which seems to be a prominent theme throughout this season, it was a step back from what had been established in previous episodes. The season is close to ending, and we have yet to have a clear idea as to what all of these storylines will connect to. Is the ultimate big bad Q or the Borg Queen? This episode proved that there is no sense of direction in the season, and hopefully it finds one by the end.
