Everyone’s favourite blue hedgehog is back on the big screen! The sophomore adventure of Sonic the Hedgehog joins him with familiar faces from his first movie and brings in some new faces that hardcore fans of the games will be more than enthusiastic to welcome into this new adventure, including: Miles Tails Prower and Knuckles the Echidna. So, we need to discuss the aftermath of this adventure and the epic meet-up of these iconic characters on the big screen, as such this is your SPOILER WARNING. From here on out we will be freely discussion spoilers about the ending of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and its mid-credits scene.
WARNING: SPOILERS FOR SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 MID-CREDIT SCENE
In this sequel we meet Sonic as he has settled in Green Hills and is eager to prove he has what it takes to be a true hero. His test comes when Dr. Robotnik returns, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a globe-trotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.

However, those are only the faces your EXPECT to see, as director Jeff Fowler and screenwriters Pat Casey, Josh Miller and John Whittington fully show their Sonic nerd-card as after bringing the fan-favorite characters, the Master Emerald, and even Super Sonic who makes easy work of Robotnik’s giant robot, they keep perhaps the biggest (and best) surprise for midway through the credits.
As G.U.N. (Guardian Units of Nations) is rummaging through the wreckage of the giant robot, with no sign of Robotnik himself, we see Agent Stone has infiltrated the unit and goes by unnoticed, perhaps on his own attempt to find and retrieve Robotnik so they can prepare for another attack to take down/capture Sonic and his crew. Commander Walters himself is on sight as is approached by one of his soldiers who claims that when wiping Robotnik off their database they found a hidden file dating back over 50 years. The commander is caught off guard, and when he asks what was in a file we learn that inside are coordinates to a secret research facility, a black site that someone tried very hard to keep hidden.
As the words are spoken, we cut to a hidden chamber popping out of the ground, covered in half-melted snow and ice as the Commander shakily exclaims “My God… Project Shadow”. With his words and the score intensifying we see Shadow the Hedgehog inside the chamber, opening his eyes which are overflowing with power.
This scene is *HUGE* as Shadow may as well be the actual fan-favorite character of this entire franchise, the scene is not only a great reveal, but also an incredibly exciting note to end the movie on and send fans home happy, eager for the next instalment, which is sure to come as Paramount has already announced the 3rd film and several TV Shows to expand their Sonic universe.
There’re several logic question that are fairly raised in this mid-credits scene with the information we do have, perhaps the biggest one being: How does the project date back 50 years if Sonic himself has only been here for 2?

Well, putting together the information we do get from BOTH Sonic movies, we may see an eventual change or new layer revealed to Robotnik’s motivations. As we know from the first movie, Robotnik is an evil and misanthropic scientist who seeks to capture Sonic the Hedgehog and harness his powers in order to take over the Earth.
Well, we could learn in the 3rd film that maybe Sonic is not the first of his kind to come to Earth, and a younger Robotnik may have found his unhealthy ambition with an older hedgehog, having created Shadow with a strand of DNA from this creature. So, Shadow may have been a creation of Robotnik over 50 years ago, and maybe this dark hedgehog was just too powerful to be controlled even by the world’s most brilliant scientist, so he was locked away, in hopes of never being found.

We could also stick closer to the game and have Shadow be a creation of Gerald Robotnik, Ivo’s grandfather, maybe see Jim Carey play a dual role as two different family members. It could also be a fun way to explore Robotnik a bit more, maybe give him a motivation that would have him trying to live up to his grandfather’s creation and maybe that’s why he wants Sonic. We could also see a Robotnik that is desperately trying to prove that his grandfather was a brilliant scientist that created this amazing weapon but the government kept hidden, dismissing his genius, and now Robotnik seeks revenge and wants to use Shadow himself.
Sticking closer to the games could imply bringing in Black Doom and the Black Arms and that may just get a bit too complicated and overwhelming to introduce in a single movie, but the black Arms could be a common enemy of the Owls and Echidna’s, maybe even the ones who brought them to clash with one another and therefore are indirectly responsible for Sonic’s and Knuckles’ most devastating losses.
Among all these interesting possibilities for the 3rd movie, all of them would open the doors for an interesting team-up of Sonic AND Robotnik to take down Shadow, one way or another. In just one scene Fowler and his screenwriters effectively set up the next antagonist and the next story in a fantastic way and opened the possibilities for what could happen in the movie to conclude this Sonic trilogy.
