Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Picard Season 2 Episode 4

Last week’s episode of Star Trek: Picard ended on a big cliffhanger, with Ríos being taken by immigration with no way of contacting the crew. Now, Raffi and Seven have located his badge in the hospital, but when they get there, he is nowhere to be found. After being told by one of the nurses what had happened, Raffi and Seven are visibly confused, but they quickly embark on a mission to try to find Ríos.

Back in La Sirena with Picard, Agnes and the Borg Queen, the latter keeps playing with them both, and is not planning on releasing her control just yet. Picard has been getting a lot of flashbacks from his childhood, triggered by the Borg Queen and also perhaps Q. Although we have yet to see Q again, since his debut in episodes 1 and 2, his presence still looms, and there is no doubt that there will be a big reveal involving Q soon.

The memories that are being triggered in Picard’s mind all involve his mother, and each time she sings him a song or starts telling him a story. Perhaps the clue to restore the timeline lies in his past, a family member? Picard is the last Picard, his brother Robert and nephew Renee died in Star Trek: Insurrection, but maybe there is a clue in the past involving them that will fix their current predicament.

In true Picard fashion, Picard beams down to Earth without notifying anyone, and sets out to fix the problems himself. It’s what Picard does, disobey his peers and get the job done himself. He finds a familiar sight, 10 Forward. Thrilled that at least he knows a place in this strange timeline, Picard walks in, where he is greeted by no other than a young Guinan. Naturally, Picard is thrilled to see one of his oldest friends, but she doesn’t recognize him, because in her timeline, they haven’t met yet. Picard convinces her that they will become friends in the future, even though Guinan is still hesitant.

    Santiago Cabrera Picard Interview

Making our way back to Ríos, he is being held in a facility, where he will be deported. Now, there is a lot of growth that is going to happen with Ríos, like Santiago Cabrera mentioned in the interview. However, seeing the only Latinx character in the show be designated a storyline about deportation and trauma, is frustrating. He went from being the captain of the USS Stargazer, to being imprisoned to be deported.

The interesting thing is that Ríos’ nationality has never been revealed, there is no record of him in 2024, where would they even deport him? Is he going to be automatically dubbed Mexican? His speech to the officer, regarding what they do, was a powerful moment, but overall, I hope this storyline gets better.

While Raffi and Seven are tracking down Ríos, Agnes is still in La Sirena with the Borg Queen, still trying to be a hero and continuing her apology tour and redemption arc, is making a deal with the Borg Queen to save everyone. This clearly will not end well.

The episode wraps with young Guinan taking Picard to the Watcher, who takes the form of different people, but has yet to reveal themselves. The lack of Q is shocking, so I think assuming he is behind the Watcher is a safe bet, but I am expecting a big twist involving the Watcher.

    Rating: 3.5 out of 5
