I Carry You With Me is a story about love — but there is so much heartbreak in this movie that at times, it can be hard to watch knowing this truly goes on in the world. I’ve heard the stories — and you probably have too — but to actually see it is another thing. This movie feels like it perfectly portrays what gay men have to go through in Mexico, although I, of course, cannot say that with certainty.
Fair warning, this movie has subtitles so you have to really pay attention to it if you do not speak Spanish. I didn’t mind the subtitles though, as the movie was very intriguing for me right from the beginning. As painful as the story is to take in, it was more than worth the watch.
The way this movie is shot can be described in one word — striking. I absolutely loved the different angles and the cinematography. It is so very clear that the director, Heidi Ewing, deeply cares for the main characters of Ivan and Gerardo.
Speaking of these characters, there love oozes through the screen and the chemistry between these actors really makes the story believable.
Overall Thoughts
This story is an important one to tell. I Carry You With Me brings light to the struggles that LGBTQ have in Mexico, but also the struggle that immigrants in the United States have as well. Sure, there might be a lot of agenda here, but it is done in such a way that it makes sense, it will make you understand, and any normal viewer will come out of it with a lot empathy.
At times this movie is a bit hard to watch, not because it is bad, but because of the reality it is showing us. That being said, I Carry You With Me is more than worth a watch. Clocking in at just under two hours, this movie will give you the insight into what others are dealing with.
