Colin Farrell continues to prove that he is one of today’s best working actors in Apple TV’s Sugar Season 2.

Apple TV’s Sugar is back with season two, and while it might seem impossible to think this season is even better than the first, it is. Colin Farrell remains brilliant throughout this season. Even though the cat is out of the bag on his secret, so to speak, that doesn’t mean the momentum slows down. In fact, the stakes seem even higher this time around.

His newest case is more personal to him than ever, as it centers around a missing sibling, something he has experience with due to the loss of his sister. This causes him to blur the line more than once as he continues to navigate his instincts and the rules that come with being an alien with orders to simply observe and report. As he starts to feel urges to explore more of human nature, John Sugar (Colin Farrell) has an inner turmoil that looms over the season.

Colin Farrell does a brilliant job of showcasing these struggles. The season often features flashback sequences that allow us to compare who John Sugar was when he first arrived on the planet with who he is now. Because of the top-notch acting, it is easy to learn more about his journey and what has shaped him into the man, or being, he is now. With anyone else in the role I am not sure how well it would work. He is truly a perfect casting choice.

Without spoilers, this season goes to a completely unexpected place, especially in the later episodes. Sugar is tested over and over, with Colin Farrell continuing to do an amazing job in the role. There are twists and turns all throughout the season, but the biggest thing for me was how emotional it gets. There were several moments where I found myself wiping away tears.

As someone who has two kids and has a sibling myself, I know that bond well. The one where you will do absolutely anything for one another, no matter how tumultuous the relationship gets. That is why parts of this season absolutely rip my heart out. Pretty much from the first episode, I knew that was going to be the case, but as more and more things are revealed, it was clear that parts of this season were going to be a tough watch. All of that to say, the pacing is spot on, the reveals perfectly timed, and the acting superb.

Sugar Season 2 could have fallen very flat, considering the big reveal that John Sugar is an alien being at the end of Season 1. Where do you go from there and still keep things not just interesting but entertaining? Well, Apple TV succeeded because this season is even better than the first. And with the way it all ends, I have my fingers crossed for a season three because there are plenty more answers to reveal.
