Rick and Morty Season 9 Review

Rick and Morty Season 9 is the best the series has been in a while, and that is coming from someone who thoroughly enjoyed the last few seasons.

Rick and Morty Season 9 review

If there is one thing we have learned from the chaotic trajectory of Rick and Morty, it’s that the series thrives on going way too far. Season 9 comes back on Sunday, May 24, and I can confidently say the this season is the best in years – if not the best ever.

In recent years, even the most die-hard fans have admitted that while there are very high highs, there are also some pretty low lows. Personally, I have enjoyed every bit of the chaos that Rick and Morty bring along with them, but I can also see where others are coming from. That said, I think every fan will be thrilled with what Rick and Morty Season 9 delivers.

It’s no longer trying to out-meta itself or apologize for its existence. Rick and Motry knows exactly what it is, and it delivers high-concept, creative, and unique stories that feel fresh. If you’re one of the viewers who drifted away during the middle seasons, this is the time to portal back in. You won’t regret it.

Rick and Morty Season 9 review

The official description jokes that this is “Grade A organic slop” made by humans with “back hair and cysts,” and that human touch is palpable. The character writing is some of the best the series has ever produced. Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden have fully inhabited the roles of Rick and Morty, making the transition feel like a distant memory.

But what really stands out this season is the internal logic of the Smith household. Hilariously, the season keeps looping back to a specific recurring bit: the fact that the Smiths have a swimming pool. It sounds like a throwaway detail, but the way the writers weave it into the dialogue and the high-stakes sci-fi hijinks is comedic gold. It’s that classic Rick and Morty brand of humor – taking something mundane and domestic and hammering it until it becomes absurdly funny. It hits consistently every single time it’s mentioned.

Rick and Morty Season 9 review

The most impressive feat of Season 9, in my opinion, is the lack of filler episodes. Each episode this season brilliantly leads into the next, and while yes, they could (for the most part) be watched out of order, it is more cohesive than seasons of the past.

Season 9 of Rick and Morty proves that the show still has plenty of gas left in the tank. It is hilarious, ambitious, and, most importantly, consistently brilliant. By leaning into the absurdity of the Smith family’s domestic life while pushing the boundaries of sci-fi storytelling, the team has delivered what just might be the best season yet.
