The Saviors Review: Predictable But Bold

Adam Scott and Danielle Deadwyler anchor The Saviors, a paranoid thriller that turns suburban dread into a global crisis. Predictable? Maybe. Bold? Yes.

The Saviors might be predictable, but it is a thriller that will keep viewers invested, as they question if they really have figured it all out or not. Thanks to incredible lead performances and a supporting cast that keeps you guessing, the bold ending comes out of nowhere – in a good way.

The film introduces us to Mark (Adam Scott) and Sarah (Danielle Deadwyler), a couple who have decided to go their separate ways. They rent out their guest house to supplement their income, which is how the supporting cast – Muslim siblings played by Theo Rossi and Nazanin Boniadi – is introduced.

I found myself immediately suspicious. The film doesn’t try to hide that something is off about them, and frankly, it didn’t take me long to put my finger on exactly what that was – even if the script tries to make you think otherwise. I’ll be honest: the central twist of the film was not hard for me to figure out. If you’ve seen enough sci-fi films or psychological thrillers, the breadcrumbs are easy to piece together. However, knowing the destination didn’t actually ruin the trip.

The brilliance of the screenplay lies in how it weaves in contemporary cultural fears. It captures the paranoia and the fear of “others”, the instability of the economy, and the sense that the truth is something only people in the basement truly understand. Even though I was 90% sure I knew where this was going, the film constantly made me second-guess that remaining 10%. Just as I’d settle into my theory, something else would happen and I would start to wonder if I did, in fact, have it all figured out or not.

Adam Scott is, as always, a master of the stressed everyman. He carries a weight on his shoulders that makes you feel the exhaustion of his character’s life. Opposite him, Danielle Deadwyler provides the film’s soul. Together, they portray a couple that has lost their way so profoundly that you find yourself rooting for them to survive not just the mysterious tenants, but their own resentment. You want them to find their way back to one another, even if you are not sure it is what is best for them.

While I may have seen the big reveal coming, I absolutely did not predict how The Saviors would end. The closing act almost comes out of nowhere, shifting from a claustrophobic thriller into something much more world-altering.

Is the ending satisfying? I’m still chewing on that. It’s undeniably bold, circumventing the traditional safe resolution, but I am still unsure if I liked it. I found myself wanting more – perhaps another ten minutes to process the sheer scale of the revelation. But in an era of cinema that often over-explains itself, there is something refreshing about a film that drops a bombshell and leaves you to sit in the debris.

The Saviors is a tight, effective thriller that overcomes its predictable beats through sheer atmosphere and top-tier acting. It highlights cultural fears, while at the same time denouncing them. It gives us just enough to keep us guessing. Even though I figured it out fairly early on, I never anticipated that ending and I remained unsure throughout, which is a testament to a good script.
