FROM‘s Hannah Cheramy breaks down Julie’s Season 4 grief, her rift with Tabitha, and why she’s keeping her secrets close in this interview.
FROM Season 4 has just started, but it is already taking viewers on a twisted journey. The town, a purgatory where nightmares take physical form, continues to challenge the resilience of the Matthews family. The line between reality and the supernatural has blurred, leaving fans desperate for answers. Julie Matthews’ journey from a terrified teenager to a battle-hardened survivor has been one of the series’ most compelling arcs.
Mama’s Geeky spoke with Hannah Cheramy, who portrays Julie Matthews, to dive into the emotional wreckage of Season 4. Following the devastating loss of her father, Julie finds herself navigating a path far different from that of her mother, Tabitha. In our chat, Cheramy opens up about the “double jeopardy” of losing a parent twice, the reason she is keeping her supernatural discoveries a secret, and why she wouldn’t actually mind a “super cool death scene” for her character as the series heads toward its fifth and final season.
Hannah Cheramy Talks FROM Season 4

Mama’s Geeky: Can you talk about the impact of her father’s death on Julie this season, especially at the beginning?
Hannah Cheramy: Yeah, I mean, for anybody losing a parent is just so horrendous. It would completely change the trajectory of your life, but specifically for Julie and where she’s at, and she feels like she just got him back. Like she feels like she was missing him for so long after the loss of Thomas, their little brother, both of her parents. And she feels like she finally, she got him back in that way. So to lose him again is like double jeopardy. Like it’s just, it feels like never ending for her. And so I think that’s why she’s in such a place of denial of like, I have to get him back. I can’t, I can’t lose this. Like, I can’t go through it again.

Mama’s Geeky: Julie also witnesses it – it’s just horrific. And it seems to cause a major rift with her mom, Tabitha.
Hannah Cheramy: Yeah, there’s definitely disconnect this season between Tabitha and Julie. They’re on very different paths. Tabitha is very much in a place of denial and very much in a place of, I can’t believe this is happening to me. And like when Jade tries to talk to her, it’s like, no, like I can’t, I can’t do this. I have to focus on, you know, my grief and my kids and all that. Versus Julie is like, I can’t think about that. I really can’t. I need to go distract myself. I need to like make this work because I can’t deal with this emotion that I’m feeling.

Mama’s Geeky: She really puts her all into the time-jumping, almost to distract herself, but she doesn’t tell everyone about her ability to do it. Why keep that information so close to the chest?
Hannah Cheramy: I think that if I was experiencing something similar, I don’t know if I would go blab about it to the town or something, you know, because look at how everyone treated Tabitha when she got out. Everyone was like, you’re not telling us stuff, blah, blah, blah, blah. I’m gonna figure this out myself. And then someone dies. And I think that’s exactly what Julie does not want to happen is I don’t want, she doesn’t want people to think that she understands more than she does and is like putting off more than she knows. And so I think she wants to understand it, wrap her head around it, figure it out with Randall, who she trusts. And then maybe she can go into telling people about that.
Mama’s Geeky: Did you actually cut it for the show?
Hannah Cheramy: No, I was actually like, literally I was like telling him, I was like, guys, cut my hair. I’ll cut my hair. But they like, we were so unsure of like, well, what if there’s another long haired scene that we need? It’s like some kind of flashback. So they were like, no, we’re just gonna, we’re gonna do the wig, the bob. But you would have done it? I would have. I’m like going into season five now, I’m like, am I still going to keep that, my word on that? Cause I don’t know. Now I’m kind of like, I like my own hair.

Mama’s Geeky: With the show ending on its own terms in Season 5, do you have thoughts on how Julie’s story should end?
Hannah Cheramy: I don’t really think like, I don’t think too much about like, how’s Julie gonna escape? Like, I don’t even know if she’s gonna make it. Yeah, it’d be great if she lived, but I mean like, a super cool death scene would also be really fun. Like, I don’t know. Like maybe she has some crazy story walking and like, save yourself. You know, like, that’d be fun.
Mama’s Geeky: The death scenes in this show are always next level.
Hannah Cheramy: Yeah, at least the death scenes are always pretty cool. Yeah, like if you’re gonna die, you’re gonna die in a cool way. Like, yeah, like Jim, it was horrible to lose him, but like, shit, was that a cool death? Like, that was so cool. I mean, getting stuck in a pool, that’s like cool too. Also, yeah, that’s the thing is that it doesn’t even have to be like, it’s like not even like, oh, only like the main, main, main characters die in cool ways and everyone else just kind of, no, like even characters that like, like first episode, like with the grandma, like the little girl and her mom, like that was the introduction to like, they’re just like ripped open and gutted. And it’s just like, yeah. It’s so cool.
