Go behind the scenes of For All Mankind Season 5 as the new generation takes over, with cast and creators teasing the show’s bold evolution.

As a massive fan of the series, walking onto the set of For All Mankind felt surreal. The scale alone is staggering, with detailed spacecraft interiors and sprawling Martian landscapes, but it is the love that the cast and creators have for the show that is the most impressive.
Now heading into its fifth season – premiering March 27 on Apple TV! – For All Mankind continues to evolve, pushing its story further into the future with a new generation of characters. And with the recent announcement that the series has been renewed for a sixth and final season, the showrunners are getting the rare opportunity to fully complete the story on their own terms.
Mama’s Geeky was invited to visit the set, as well as conduct some interviews. I spoke with co-creators and co-showrunners Ben Nedivi and Matt Wolpert, along with cast members Sean Kaufman, Ruby Cruz, Ines Høysæter Asserson, and Barrett Carnahan. From navigating major cast changes to filming emotionally intense scenes and embracing this new generation of characters, they shared what makes For All Mankind Season 5 such a pivotal chapter.
Ben Nedivi & Matt Wolpert on Evolving the Cast

From the beginning, For All Mankind was designed to span decades – meaning the cast would inevitably change in a way most shows never attempt.
“We knew, okay, for this concept to work, the cast at the end is going to be almost entirely different than the cast at the beginning,” Nedivi explained. “Which is very rare. I mean, TV is all about characters.”
What sounded like an exciting creative idea early on became much harder in practice. “You meet these amazing people, and then you’re saying goodbye,” he continued. “On a personal level, it’s maybe the most difficult part of what we’ve had to do on this show. Because they become like a family.”
Wolpert added that balancing that transition was key. “We didn’t want to go one year from old cast to new cast. Some characters from the beginning stay and some leave. And it’s not just happening all at once.”
At the same time, bringing in new talent was essential to keeping the show fresh. “You also have to bring in fresh blood that keeps the level of talent high,” Nedivi said. “We wanted to make sure that level never dropped.”
Sean Kaufman on Heavy Scenes & Finding Joy On Set

For All Mankind Season 5 leans into darker, more intense storytelling, and for Sean Kaufman, filming those moments could be exhausting.
“What was it like filming some of those more violent sequences? Long. Long and tiring,” he admitted.
But even during the heaviest scenes, there was one constant source of relief: his co-star Ruby Cruz.
“Honestly, one of the only things that keeps me going during those scenes is Ruby,” Kaufman shared. “She’s making me laugh and crack up during the height of all this tension and depressing stuff.”
That balance between intensity and levity seems to define the season, as Sean Kaufman also emphasized the emotional weight of the story. “It’s a lot… it’s heavy stuff,” he said.
At the same time, he sees the show’s generational shift as something deeply relatable. “It’s always on younger generations’ shoulders to rebel when needed. It’s the passing of the guard,” he explained.
Ruby Cruz on Lightening the Mood & Finding Lily’s Voice
While Season 5 explores darker themes, Ruby Cruz made it her mission to bring some lightness to set. “I was trying,” she said with a laugh when told she helped keep the mood upbeat.
That energy translated into her performance as Lily, especially as the character comes into her own. “Exploring Lily’s realization that she can actually fight for what she believes in was a really important thing,” Cruz shared.
The season also allowed her to connect deeply with the world of Mars. “It was really cool to imagine Mars as a beautiful home planet,” she said. Despite the intensity, there were moments of joy – like filming one particularly fun dance sequence. “I loved this scene. It’s so fun. I feel healed,” she said.
Ines Høysæter Asserson on Joining the Next Generation

As part of the newer wave of characters, Ines Høysæter Asserson embraced the unique opportunity to help shape the future of the series. “The nature of the show is that it renews itself every season,” she explained. “There are always so many opportunities for where it can go.” Stepping into that evolving world came with a sense of creative freedom.
“It’s like having a prompt and then you get to really meet it with your own ideas,” she said.
She also noted how the shift in characters creates an interesting dynamic both on and off screen. “There’s an absence to be filled. It creates this meta feeling,” Asserson shared.
And like many fans, she quickly became hooked on the series. “I watched everything before starting filming. I just devoured it,” she added.
Barrett Carnahan on the Magic of the Set

For Barrett Carnahan, simply being part of For All Mankind is an unforgettable experience – especially when stepping onto its massive sets. “First of all, just being on this show, period, is amazing,” he said.
The scale of production left a lasting impression. “They have five stages on Sony. That’s unheard of for a television show,” Carnahan shared.
One moment in particular stood out: “There was this massive wrap-around green screen, and in the middle was this massive rover on this otherworldly planet terrain, I thought, I can’t believe I’m here.”
For him, the job taps into something deeply nostalgic. “We get to do the stuff that we wanted to do when we were five years old. It’s unreal,” he said.
But beyond the spectacle, Carnahan also reflected on the deeper themes the show explores – especially when it comes to sacrifice and conflict.
“Think about World War II. All those people died not knowing if Hitler took over the world,” he said. “That’s sacrifice.”
For him, that idea directly connects to the story unfolding in For All Mankind Season 5, where characters are forced to make impossible choices. “If you believe in something hard enough, it’s worth it,” he added.

For All Mankind Seasons 5 & 6
Season 5 of For All Mankind represents a turning point – one where the next generation takes center stage while the legacy of the past still lingers. It’s a delicate balance of evolution and continuity, something the creative team has been building toward from the very beginning.
With its ambitious storytelling, emotional weight, and ever-expanding world, the series continues to prove why it remains one of Apple TV+’s most compelling originals. And as it heads toward its already-confirmed final season, there’s never been a better time to strap in for the journey ahead.
Tune in for the For All Mankind Season 5 premiere on March 27th on Apple TV.
