Transformers One Review: An Epic & Unexpected Origin Story

Anyone who has been through a friend break-up can vouch that it is just as difficult (if not more difficult) than a romantic break-up. That is the concept that Transformers One explores. Everyone knows that Optimus Prime and Megatron have beef between them. But why? This film dives into the untold origin story of how their friendship devolved into the rivalry that fans know it is as today.

Chris Hemsworth and Bryan Tryee Henry have some big shoes to fill as two of the most iconic voices in fandom, Optimus Prime (who starts out as Orion Pax) and Megatron (who starts out as D-16) respectively. And trust me when I say, they fill those shoes well. The film starts out with them using their regular voices, but over time, they change to be more like the voices we know – and it is absolutely incredible to witness.

Transformers One boasts an incredible cast on top of the two leads, including the always hilarious Keegan-Michael Key as B (who later becomes Bumblebee). He wants so badly to have a friendship that he is constantly the third wheel in Orion Pax and D-16’s relationship, which creates a ton of ridiculous and funny moments. Rounding out the group as their fourth is Scarlett Johansson as Elita-1, who adds the seriousness to their dynamic.

If you are a fan of Transformers, chances are you are going to love this film. Not only does it explore untold lore and answer questions, there are a lot of Easter eggs and references to past Transformers projects. That said, you do not have to know anything about Transformers to understand Transformers One. It is an origin story and a great introduction to the lore.

Transformers One is also an absolute blast to watch. It is filled with epic action sequences that not only help to drive the story forward, but are honestly just a lot of fun. The visuals are stunning and the animation is gorgeous. This movie begs to be seen on the biggest screen possible.
