Never Let Go is one of those movies that is so filled with twists and turns that it keeps you guessing until the very end – and even then you aren’t sure what is real and what isn’t.
Never Let Go is the true definition of a psychological thriller. It will have viewers wondering what is real and what isn’t throughout the entire film, and even, potentially, past the ending. Halle Berry is fantastic, per usual, but it is the two young actors, Anthony B. Jenkins & Percy Daggs IV, that take the film to the next level.
In Never Let Go, a family has been tourmented by an evil that has taken over the world. The only thing keeping them safe is the house they live in that was built with ancient wood. Of course, it would be impossible for them to survive without leaving the house, so they use ropes that are attached to the foundation. As long as they never left go of them, they are protected from the evil.
Halle Berry plays the mother of twin boys who is willing to do anything she can to keep them safe. For some reason the evil shows itself to her, but not to them. This causes them to doubt her at times, as they grow older. It also causes the audience to have their doubts. The movie itself never truly gives you the answer, which is part of what is so intriguing about it.
Never Let Go takes viewers on a wild ride through doubt and evil. Some might think there are too many twists and turns without any actual answers, but that is what works so well for me. As a mother, I related to what Halle Berry’s character does in a way – but cannot help but feel for her. She is clearly not well, whether the evil is real or not.
There are jump scares and difficult scenes to watch (trigger warning for dog lovers), which only heighten the tension, but this movie is dark, sinister, and creepy as well. The woods and the house itself are so alive in the film that they feel like their own characters.
Often in horror movies the house is where the darkness lurks, but in this movie it is everywhere else. Never Let Go boasts an incredible cast, intruging plot, and so many twists and turns it will make your head spin – in a good way.
