The Problem With People is a relatable and charming comedy that works incredibly well thanks to the two lead actors – Paul Reiser and Colm Meaney.
Just take one look at the title of this film and it is safe to say that everyone will feel that they can relate to it. The Problem With People doesn’t focus on the issues with society as a whole, however, but rather deep dives into family drama – which is something we have all certainly experienced at one time or another.
Barry (Paul Reiser) and Ciáran (Colm Meaney) live on opposite sides of the world. One in New York City and one in Ireland. When tragedy strikes the family, these two estranged cousins start to form a friendship. But as with all families, that is much easier said than done. The two vow to squash the longtime family beef, but are quickly sucked back into it.
What follows is a whole lot of hilarious antics between the cousins, but also some important lessons about putting your differences aside, especially when it comes to family members. If someone is not seriously offending you, or being cruel, there is hope for the relationship to be mended. Life is too short to hold onto grudges over silly things.
The majority of the film takes place in Ireland, and with a stunning backdrop like that, you really can’t go wrong. Sure, there are a lot of funny moments, but a lot of watchers will find themselves looking at the beautiful scenery.
The Problem With People could have been just another predictable family dramedy, but it ends up being so much more than that. Reiser and Meaney are not only hilarious opposite one another, the audience starts to truly care for them both, and root for them to reconnect. Throw in Jane Levy as Barry’s daughter Natalya, and Lucianne McEvoy as Fiona, and you have a winning team. Plus, the ending of the movie comes out of leftfield — in a good way — making it impossible to figure out ahead of time.
As a big fan of Suburgatory, this writer found it a little hard to recognize Levy as a grown-up rather than a High Schooler at first, but her incredible performance certainly helped. The pacing moves at a steady speed, never offering a dip in the fun or heart of the film. The Problem With People remains entertaining all the way through, which is a testament to the writing, acting, and editing.
The heart shines through in this movie, hopefully making viewers realize that life is too short. Who knows, some people might even pick up the phone and call someone they are feuding with to mend things after watching The Problem With People.
Overall, this movie is lighthearted and fun, with just enough heartwarming moments weaved through to keep you smiling.
