Power Of Prime NYCC Panel Teases Upcoming Series
Prime Video’s Power of Prime panel at New York Comic Con 2023 teased so many upcoming projects from Invincible, Wheel of Time and Hazbin Hotel, many creatives came to the stage to update us on the projects.
As deserved, Invincible by far has the longest interview during the Power of Prime panel. Fans raved about season one and have been eagerly awaiting season two. at the panel.
The creator, Robert Kirkman and producer Simon Racioppa sat down to talk about not just Season 2, but Season 3, as well. They also premiered the new season 2 trailer which released later online.
Both Kirkman and Simon started by talking about where the audience will see the characters in the beginning of season 2.
“We pickup basically at the end of Invincible Season 1” – Simon Racioppa
Kirkman and Simon continued by talking about how this season deals with the direct “ramifications” of season 1. The moderator who has seen much of the season mentioned that there was an element of grief woven through season 2.
Kirkman responded by mentioning how amazing Sandra Oh’s performance is as Debbie Grayson and how her character’s world has been “shaken to the core”. Kirkman mentions that she has been a much bigger presence in the show so far than the comics, and they plan to continue that through this next season.
“We have this tremendous roadmap ahead of us.” – Robert Kirkman
When talking about how the comic timeline compares to season 2 and 3’s timeline, Kirkman strayed away from revealing too much but made sure to mention that there is a very grand plan, not only for seasons 2 and 3 which we know were created in parallel, but if they are lucky he wants to go season 4 and beyond.
“We try to find the space between the panels, and we try to open that up, and maybe there is a little more story there.” – Simon Racioppa
Kirkman mentioned multiple times that though there are storylines in the comics they haven’t touched on at all, there are many others that are more expanded than in the comics, as previously stated, Debbie Grayson’s story.
“Its great to be able to take some of the most affecting panels… and adapt them into our animated language.” – Robert Kirkman
Kirkman detailed the impact of Cory Walker, who co-created the comics, did character designs for season one and is now a producer on season 2. He talked at length about how great of a playground Cory gave to the animation because so much was possible in terms of creating a more grand effect when translating something from a panel to animation.
“When you see it moving and hear the sounds of it… you’re like oh my gosh that is 10x worse than what we accomplished in the comics.” – Robert Kirkman
A big part of how gruesome the show is of course how much blood is shown but also the detailed and gut wrenching sounds. In regards to the level of gore, when asked about what he thinks he could get away with he responded…
“Have you ever seen the show, The Boys?”
The audience cheered and Kirkman continued by of course praising but also making fun of the show by mentioning how far they go in terms of gore and brutality. He said that he is waiting for prime video to give him a note so that he can just point a finger at the boys and say, “Uhhh I don’t know guys, I saw some things in The Boys that are pretty crazy.”
“We are just gonna hide behind The Boys and do whatever we want.” – Robert Kirkman
On a serious note, he did say how he appreciates the boundaries set between the show and Prime Video’s jurisdiction on how much gore they can show. He thinks that the balance is at a great place right now.
In regards to season 3, Kirkman added that they are putting finishing bits on season 2 and they are “very far in” with season 3. When asked what portion of the books Invincible season 3 covers, he declined to answer. He admits that if he reveals the point where season 3 starts, he would inherently spoil season 2. This of course means that like seasons 1 and 2, seasons 2 and 3 will, timeline wise, start relatively back to back.
When asked if any of Kirkman’s old Walking Dead friends would make voice appearances in the show he said, “You know its possible that there might be a few Walking Dead alumni that are popping up in Invincible at some point.”
This makes a lot of sense as the voice cast is already a length list going into Invincible season 2 and both Kirkman and Racioppa noted that the casts will only get bigger as the seasons progress.
Following up Invincible, the new Prime Video Original animated show Hazbin Hotel had a presentation during the Power of Prime NYCC 2023 Panel.
Creator Vivienne Medrano talked about the show and the process of making it. The pilot was on her YouTube channel and has amassed over 90 million views. She says that this is also the “first animated project out of A24”.
This collaboration between Prime Video and A24 marks a step forward in A24’s company but also Medrano’s career as this is her first big project.
The Power of Prime NYCC Panel then transitions to talk about Wheel of Time. Producer Marigo Kehoe, Production VFX Supervisor Andy Scarse, and VFX Producer Brian Shows sat down to talk about Season 2 and some of the creative processes in the season.
“We work very closely with out post-team” – Marigo Kehoe
A big praise of Wheel of Time is how visually striking the magical elements are – this is no surprise after hearing how involved every process of the show is. According to the VFX Supervisor, there was a lot of creative effort that went into crafting the look of the magic, but also the influence of VFX on the sets. From extended sets to props, the production team and VFX team work hand-in-hand to produce seamless VFX additions to the show.
These shows all stream on Prime Video.
