Ghosted might have some great moments mixed in, but overall it is a predictable, sloppy, mess of a movie that even two brilliant lead actors can’t fix.
If you like a romantic comedy mixed with massive action sequences, then Ghosted might be for you. In this film Cole (Chris Evans) meets Sadie (Ana de Armis) at a farmer’s market. After spending the day together he thinks she could be the one.
When she disappears on him, he finds a way to track her down. It doesn’t take long before he realizes she isn’t an art curator at all, but rather a CIA Agent. What follows is a very messy (and long) story which involves him getting sucked into her mission.
What Works With Ghosted
Let’s start with the positive things in this movie. So what works with Ghosted? Unfortunately not much. Seeing Chris Evans in a way that we haven’t really seen him before is probably the best part. There is no denying he is an attractive guy, but his charm has always come from him the fact that he is a total geek. His fans often see him kicking butt and taking names. Now yes, there are times we have seen him in a more touching and heartfelt role, like in Gifted, and that is what we get from him here.
Evans delivers a great performance. It is easy to root for Cole because of how Evans portrays him — even if he is definitely a bit creepy when it comes to relationships. Don’t worry though action fans, there are a few times the script allows him to show off his butt-kicking skills.
Continuing the Chris Evans praise, the few scenes he has with the rest of Cole’s family are cute and fun. It is nice to see a family acting silly with each other. This was something I could have used a lot more of in Ghosted. But hey, maybe we will get a wedding in Ghosted 2, should they make one.
I wouldn’t be a true Marvel fan if I didn’t mention the multiple cameos in this movie. I can picture Chris Evans calling up his MCU buddies and asking them for a favor. Their scenes do not disappoint, and it is lovely to see some familiar faces.
There are some decent action scenes here as well, especially the final one. To say it is epic would be an overstatement, but it is big and entertaining to watch.
What Doesn’t Work With Ghosted
Now let’s move on to the slightly less entertaining aspects of Ghosted. I need to preface this by saying that I went into this movie really excited about it. I love both Chris Evans and Ana de Armis. I enjoy a solid action packed film. And I am not super picky on dialogue when it comes to films like this.
However, the script for Ghosted has a lot of issues. It is extremely cheesy at times. To the point where you think, is that on purpose? The problem is, it likely isn’t. Maybe a few lines here or there were thrown in to make the audience chuckle or roll their eyes, but there are far too many to let it just slide when they end up missing rather than hitting.
Many of these involve Adrien Brody’s character, who is another fantastic actor that doesn’t quite get to show everyone what he is made of in Ghosted. He plays a bad guy and while there times he comes off as scary and intimidating, they are few and far between.
Right from the start there is absolutely no chemistry between Ana de Armis and Chris Evans. This is very disappointing because, as I mentioned, I adore them both. Instead of fun and flirty it comes off as awkward and hard to watch.
There is one scene where they are under the sheets, if you catch my drift, and with these two talented actors it should have been sexy. Instead it is anything but. The longer Ghosted goes on, their relationship improves slightly. By the end, however, they barely feel like friends, and definitely not lovers.
To top it all off, this movie is far too long. If it was a solid ninety minutes it would have played out much better.
Overall Thoughts
Ghosted isn’t a bad movie, but it isn’t really good either. It has some scenes that are fun to watch and exciting cameos, but the lack of chemistry between the two leads is apparent from the beginning, and throws the whole vibe off.
Still, I wouldn’t be surprised if we end up with a sequel. It is nice to see Chris in a role we don’t see him in enough, and Ana de Armis is always great at kicking butt. Ghosted drags on far too long and never fully gets off the ground due to mediocre writing. It is always fun to see our favorite Marvel actors reunite though.
