Marvel has finally dropped the first Thor: Love and Thunder teaser trailer. As the title suggested were only teased at what’s to come: from Workout Montages, Mount Olympus, Zeus, an existential Crisis? AND JANE FOSTER’S MIGHTY THOR! Here’s our Thor: Love and Thunder teaser trailer breakdown.
The Thor: Love And Thunder teaser has arrived just as we find ourselves halfway through Moon Knight, and just ahead of the episode EVERYONE will be talking about. The trailer mostly only alludes familiar and brand-new locations, but while it does not reveal much it is filled to the brim with hints of what’s to come; both narratively and thematically.
Marvel is clearly keeping their cards close to their chest as there is not even a glimpse at Gorr the God Butcher, but we may be looking at some of his doings in a selection of shots, which should only leave us more excited for the eventual Official Trailer – From other Gods to the Asgardians of the Galaxy, to Thor’s search for meaning in his godhood – let’s break it all down.
Thor: Love and Thunder Teaser Trailer Breakdown

WHAT IS GODHOOD?
The trailer begins with a voice-over from Thor himself, over some images of Thor meditating and burying Stormbreaker: “His hands were once used for battle. Now they’re but humble tools for peace. I need to figure out exactly who I am.”
It’s good to see the movie is indeed focusing on what Thor said he was searching for at the end of Avengers: Endgame, which is the last time we saw him. From then we see Thor working out to regain his ripped, godly body; in front of a giant skeleton, this could be anything from a Frost giant to Surtur himself to… maybe another god we have not met yet.
“I will choose my own path and live in the moment. My super-heroing days are over.”
We see Thor in the battlefield with the Guardians: Star-Lord, Mantis, Nebula, Groot (still a teen) and Rocket with an unknown race of aliens, where Thor chooses not to fight and walk away. An earlier shot of Thor standing on top of a rock and undressing to reveal a very Rockstar-like attire seems to be what follows the walkout.

ASGARDIANS OF THE GALAXY NO MORE?
Early in the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer after Thor walks out on the Guardians during a battle but after that we cut to the Benatar leaving Sakkar! As it leaves Thor and Korg there, possibly in search of his meaning. Later in the trailer we get a scene of Star-Lord and Thor chatting, still in Sakkar, suggesting this chat happens before the Guardians leave and the two are bidding farewell to one another, with the former telling the God of Thunder:
“Remember what I told you. Whenever you feel lost, just look into the eyes of the people that you love.” – as he looks upon the rest of the Guardians, we get our first look at Drax.

GOAT BOAT!
This teaser moves fast, so everything we see, we only get a glimpse of. But something fans have been eager to see more of is the sensational Goat Boat, in the comics this is called Toothgnasher was Thor’s home after the destruction of Asgardia, when the Asgardians returned to living in the Old Asgard.
In here since the Asgardians are not renovating their home, it seems like this will be used for tours of their land and into the cosmos; there are two shots where we see the Goat Boat leaving Asgard; one through harbor, and another one moving up to the sky.
Later shots seeing flying amidst a sky bound city that is reminiscent of Avatar’s Pandora, but could very well be Olympus, which will most likely be illustrated as a realm in itself, similarly to how Asgard was brought to life in the MCU. We even see the Goat Boat in space approaching a planet that does not seem to be Earth.
We also get several shots of Thor aboard the boat, once as he stands, chest full kissing an alien-pirate lady?
But also looking proud and smiling as he sits next to Stormbreaker decked in full armor, cape and all.
So it seems like the Goat Boat will have a constant presence in the film as the trailer seems to suggest that it will be Thor’s means of transportation.
President Valkyrie?
There’s only one quick sighting of Valkyrie in this trailer. After she was trusted with ruling Asgard as king, it looks like Asgard as become more of a democracy, as we see her at the head of a long table of what looks like an UN-style meeting. Maybe it is exactly that, and now that Asgard is a part of Earth, Valkyrie must deals with a ton of undesirable bureaucracy that she did not expect once agreeing to be the king Asgard needed. Her look of boredom and frustration certainly seems to suggest that.

MOUNT OLYMPUS!
One of the most jaw-droppingly gorgeous vistas the trailer deliver is a grand look at Mount Olympus.
There are several shots in this location during the Thor: Love and Thunder teaser trailer; the first one with a big wide with a golden statue at the center, but if you look carefully you can see Thor, Jane Foster in her own cape and blonde mane, and Korg walking along the long corridor heading to the statue.
There is a fourth person in the party, it could be Valkyrie but also it could be just a guide, maybe the MCU’s Hermes?

Another shot in Olympus shows us what seems to be a big party, the amphitheater-like location filled with guests as Zeus welcomes them with a lightning show. We know Russell Crowe is playing the King of Olympus, but we do not get to see his face.
With the previous shot mentioned showing us Thor and Jane walking the halls of Olympus we can assume the story is well underway and our heroes are in Olympus to warn Zeus about the coming of Gorr, so my personal suggestion is: enjoy Zeus while you have him, because this one shot will probably be his introduction, but also one of his last in the film before he meets his demise.

GOD BUTCHERING
While many of the shots in the trailer seem to show Thor in his easy-going attitude, all smiles and relaxation, as he searches for meaning after everything he’s gone through and every loss he faced during his magnificent existence… there is one that stands out, because Thor looks eerily worried.

One shot that is pulled straight from the Jason Aaron Thor run in the comics, a run which the movie is specifically adapting, sees Thor and Korg in an icy landscape beholding the massive corpse of Falligar the Behemoth.
In the comics Falligar is the Patron god of the Galactic Frontier and champion god of the Tournament of Immortals, Falligar was an acquaintance of Thor, as they both occasionally passed each other on the space ways. This same shot in the comics is from when Thor visits Falligar’s homeworld only to discover that he was murdered by Gorr the God Butcher.
This scene in the Thor: Love and Thunder teaser trailer seems to serve the same purpose within the story, and it might be here that Thor is pulled into the conflict with Gorr. The only question for now is: Is this the look of someone who found a friend murdered, or the look of someone who knows by this point what is happening?

JANE FOSTER, THE MIGHTY THOR
Last but not least, the final tease we are left with after the title card is Mjolnir, cracks and all, flying into the hand of none other than Jane Foster, now in her Mighty Thor guise with her own armor, gauntlets, cape, helmet AND a golden mane as a sweet final touch. All this in front of a stunned Thor.
All this seems to happen in the middle of a battle, not the same as earlier in the teaser with the Guardians. It’s hard to make out who is fighting but it looks like humans and some sort of bug-like creatures. Thor looks to be sport Viking-style shoulder pads, which can suggest a few things. As this movie will be adapting Jason Aaron’s Thor: God of Thunder AND Jason Aaron’s Mighty Thor run we may be seeing a mix of both of those runs in bringing Jane Foster back and making her Thor.
In the God of Thunder run, Thor teams ups with 2 older versions of himself to fight off Gorr the God Butcher, but in this movie, we could see Thor teaming up with different versions of himself, so instead of jumping through time, we could bring in the multiverse elements to make up this story.
Will there be a third Thor? Maybe, could it be Valkyrie? Could it be an alternate Loki who is worthy? Could we finally get Beta Ray Bill?
Who knows, this trailer gives so many glimpses yet so little information, but that is exactly what’s so exciting about it!

About Thor: Love and Thunder
The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods.
To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.
Directed by Waititi (“Thor: Ragnarok,” “Jojo Rabbit”) and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum.
Thor: Love and Thunder opens in theaters July 8, 2022.
