Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Picard Season 2 Episode 9

The Borg are here and they must be stopped to save the future.

The Borg possessed Jurati has created an army to get her hands on La Sirena, where Ríos is hiding with Teresa and Ricardo. Agnes dons the Borg Queen’s iconic suit as she prepares for her takeover. However, Agnes, still trapped in the Borg Queen’s mind, set up a lock on the ship. The lock cannot be accessed by the Queen, and Agnes also made sure to create an Emergency Combat Hologram, that takes the form of Elnor.

It was nice to see Elnor back in action, considering that he has been dead for the entirety of the season and had not gotten a chance to use his fighting skills. When Raffi makes her way back to La Sirena, she manages to have a moment with Elnor’s hologram, where he tells her that his death is not her fault and she is being too hard on herself, he forgives her.

Together, they manage to slowly start regaining control of La Sirena, but not for long as Agnes/Borg Queen returns and stabs Seven. As Seven is dying, Agnes/Borg Queen gains control of the ship and prepares to execute her master plan. The Borg Queen prepares to kill Seven, but Agnes’ consciousness stops her by showing how no matter what, the Borg are always defeated and makes an offer, use La Sirena to create better Borg. The Queen accepts and saves Seven, by returning her Borg implants. Agnes takes over the Queen to explain how the future looks like Borg/human hybrids that are more perfect than the original.

Meanwhile, Picard and the rest of the crew prepare to fight back, and the flashbacks of Picard’s mother continue, this time featuring his father, who is none other than the therapist he was talking to in his mind at last week’s episode. The flashbacks reveal his mother’s severe mental illness, and how she tried to conceal it from him while playing numerous games, including hide and seek, which is the theme of the episode.

During the flashbacks, it’s revealed that during a game of hide and seek, a young Picard discovered his mother’s body after she committed suicide. Dr. Soong is looking for Picard, and honestly, Brent Spiner playing his dark side has been a highlight of the season. Dr. Soong is a character that I personally never found intimidating, and I’m glad that this season gave him the opportunity to explore that side of him.

Ríos is injured in battle, and Picard orders Tallin to beam him, Teresa and Ricardo to safety, she does and then locks the transmitter to not allow him to come back, frustrating him. He is trying to get back to his crew, but Teresa insists on treating his wound and she is still coming to terms with finding out about the future. She tries to convince him to stay in the past as it seems that that’s where his future is, they share a kiss, and Ríos is clearly considering staying. He returns to the crew with a specific weapon to kill the assimilated, but is not successful as Dr. Soong takes it and is destroyed.

Picard comes to terms with what happened to his mother and he and Tallin embrace, as they prepare to what comes next as Agnes/Borg Queen take La Sirena, saying that to succeed there must be two Renees, one who lives and one who dies. Is the other Renee she is referring to Picard’s late brother? Or another Renee we have yet to meet?

We have one episode left for the season, and I’m curious to see how it is all wrapped up, considering all the loose ends that this episode created. Overall, a good episode with a lot of tension, but the season has lost its way by this point, despite all the good that it has had as well.

    Rating: 4 out of 5
