The Afterparty Review: A Unique & Fun Murder Mystery

The Afterparty is a fun and unique murder mystery series where each of the eight episodes is told from the perspective of a different High School Reunion afterparty guest.

the afterparty review

The Afterparty is made for people who like silly comedy mixed with a legit murder mystery that is so suspenseful, you will be on the edge of your seat. The story takes place after a guest of the High School Reunion is killed at his own house party. Xavier (Dave Franco) is the coolest member of the graduating class, a successful musician.

Everyone has a motive to wish him dead and as Detective Danner (Tiffany Haddish) interviews them individually, the mystery gets more and more complicated.  Each of the eight episodes tells another suspects story — and each one is fun and unique.

Yasper (Ben Schwartz) is somewhat of a musician himself, so his is a musical theme. Zoe (Zoe Chao) is a bright and bubbly artist, so hers is told through animation. Chelsea (Ilana Glazer) is skiddish and has been getting threatening text messages, so her account of the night is told as a episode that fits perfectly i the horror genre. Brett (Ike Barinholtz) is extremely cocky, so of course his story pats himself on the back on more than one occasion.

Aniq (Sam Richardson) is the lead suspect from the start, so his is the first account told, but sprinkled throughout the other episodes he works with Yasper to try to clear his name. Even Danner gets her own episode. Oh, and wallflower Walt (Jamie Demetriou), who no one even remembers, tells his story as an outsider looking in.

the afterparty review

Each episode does indeed bring us closer to the killer, of course, but it never makes it obvious who it is. Viewers will be coming up with all of their own theories as it continues on, and anyone who claims that The Afterparty is predictable is lying. This show is absolutely hilarious, which is to be expected with so many great actors that are a part of it.

Every cast member shines, and has their individual moment. Somehow they all have an appeal to them too, making them easy to like, for the most part. Even Xavier — especially when his High School experience is dug into.

the afterparty review

The Afterparty is very much like Clue. It is a really fun murder mystery mini series that is packed with silly moments, relatable characters, ridiculous antics. There is a so much to love about this show, specifically the cast. The longer it goes on, the more twists and turns pop up.

This series is a great one to unwind with after a long day and have a few laughs. The fact that each episode gives viewers a new genre keeps things interesting, right up until the last second.

Because each episode gives viewers a new genre, it keeps things interesting, right up until the last second. The hilarious cast each bring something unique to this fun mystery.
