Apple TV+’s Five Days At Memorial cast interviews with Robert Pine, Cornelius Smith Jr. and Adepero Oduye.
Where were you when Hurricane Katrina landed in New Orleans? Well, I was in Miami checking on my apartment, which was also hit by Katrina days before. The new Apple TV+ series, Five Days at Memorial, shows the aftermath at the Memorial Hospital.
The eight-episode limited series is based on actual events chronicling the impact of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath on this local hospital. When the floodwaters rose, power failed, and heat soared, exhausted caregivers at a New Orleans hospital were forced to make decisions that would follow them for years to come.
Five Days at Memorial stars Emmy-award nominee Vera Farmiga, Robert Pine, Emmy-award winner Cherry Jones, Julie Ann Emery, Cornelius Smith Jr., Adepero Oduye, Molly Hager, Michael Gaston, W. Earl Brown, and more.
For this release I had the opportunity to speak with some the actors including Robert Pine, Cornelius Smith Jr., and Adepero Oduye. They all shared their experience on set and their sympathy for all the victims and to the city of New Orleans.
Experienced actor Robert Pine plays Dr. Horace Baltz and was drawn to the story due to a “very well-written script” and “wonderful”. The series was written by Emmy Award winner Carlton Cuse and it was based on the book by Sheri Fink.
Pine also shared during the interview it was easy for him to get into the character since he “wanted to be a doctor” and he “went to college as a pre-med student”.
For actor Cornelius Smith Jr., who plays Dr Bryant King, didn’t have the chance to read the script before auditioning for the role. He just got the scenes and auditioned, and he shared: “even in the scenes there was a just so much that drew me to the character because you can automatically kind of tell just the layers of circumstances and conflicts just off of two scenes.”
The talented actress Adepero Oduye who plays Karen Wynn, one of the nurses, explained her preparation to play this deep and emotional character. “I have healthcare workers in my family and so getting to talk to them but also seeing what they were going through during COVID… real life.. that helped a lot. And I also got to talk to Sheri Fink who you know created the book and she was a wealth of information. She herself was a doctor had a lot of information to give and an insight”.
Five Days at Memorial is streaming now on Apple TV+ with new episodes releasing every Friday until September 16.
