Star Trek: Picard season 2 episode 5 “Fly Me To The Moon” feels like the season is finally getting on track, despite all the great episodes so far.

Star Trek Picard 2x3 recap review

Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Picard Season 2 Episode 5

Star Trek: Picard Episode 2×5 was directed by Jonathan Frakes, therefore, we know we are in for a fantastic time. This is the first episode of season 2 directed by him, and it did not disappoint.

After being mysteriously taken by Laris at the end of the previous episode, she is revealed to not be Laris at all, but Talla. She comes bearing news that Picard’s ancestor, Renee Picard, is a possible key to fixing the mess that they are in.

The Borg Queen is controlling La Sirena, and manages to mess with Picard even more by mimicking Ríos’ voice to alert of a non-existent emergency at Picard’s vineyard. When help arrives, the Borg Queen lures the unsuspecting officer to her, and consumes him. She calls for Agnes, saying that she wants her body and mind, Agnes shoots the guard and ends up killing the Borg Queen as well.

Raffi and Seven are tracking down Ríos, knowing that they are running out of time, they manage to find the bus that has him and they free him and the rest of the immigrants. This storyline is now over, and I can only hope that we see the effects it will have on Ríos. Raffi even has a moment where she thinks she sees Elnor, and is reminded of the main mission: bringing him back. With Ríos finally free, they will now have to head back to La Sirena, where they are unaware of the Borg Queen’s control.

Star Trek Picard 2x3 recap review

Talla reveals information about Renee Picard, including that she suffers from mental illness and is currently in treatment for it, however Picard makes a shocking discovery, her “therapist” is none other than Q. He is trying to convince Renee to not go into space, thus changing the entire future.

As Picard tries to figure out how to stop Q, another beloved character makes his return: Dr. Soong. He is a geneticist, desperate to find a cure for his daughter, who happens to be Soji, known in this timeline as Kore. After he is forced to abandon his research, he receives a message from Q, saying that he can help. Desperate, he decides to meet Q. He seemingly gives Dr. Soong the cure for Kore’s disease, but that doesn’t turn out to be the truth.

    Santiago Cabrera Picard Interview

Q asks Dr. Soong if the name Picard means anything to him. Raffi, Ríos, Seven, Picard and Talla make their way back to La Sirena, where they find the scene of Agnes’ murders, naturally she feels terrible. Picard tells the crew about Renee Picard, and how they have to make sure she goes to space to discover a new species in IO.

In the gala, Agnes spots Renee, however the plan falls apart when it’s revealed that while Agnes killed the Borg Queen’s body, she has taken possession of her mind and has sabotaged the plan.

This episode feels like the season is now finally on the right track, despite the strong episodes we’ve had, this feels like a step forward. Filler storylines have been closed, and Q is back. The stakes for this season have definitely increased.

    Rating: 5 out of 5
