Disney+ is allowing the MCU to create television shows as a part of their way of telling stories. But, will it become too much for us, the audience, or will it depend on the number of projects we get each year from Marvel Studios?
This article comes from someone who keeps up to date with all Marvel projects, including the Disney+ series. With Marvel continuing to announce shows about to release or in development. The question becomes will it be too much? Will it get to the point where we either don’t watch all of it, or we lose interest?
People are already discussing this as we hear about more & more shows being added to the slate of upcoming MCU projects. The MCU audience is accustomed to several films per year, but now adding a few series may cause a turning point for the franchise.
Just look at the brief collection of shows coming from Marvel Studios. Only Moon Knight has been released at this point. Now I’m excited about all these shows, and I see myself watching them all. I, however, can’t speak for everyone as it seems to be too much for some people. We have had WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, What If…?, Hawkeye, Moon Knight, and Ms. Marvel getting close to airing.
That is a lot of added content already, and of course, Marvel has been good about spreading these shows out sometimes, but there may come a time where it becomes too much content at once. We may already be there, as some are voicing their issues with how many shows keep getting announced. To some, it’s looking like Marvel is turning from quality to quantity, which wouldn’t be great for the MCU.
At what point will we, as the fanbase of the MCU, say, “it’s too much.” Maybe it’s just that it’s a change, and the fact we didn’t have Disney+ shows before Phase 4 for us to get used to this new part of the MCU. It wasn’t like a gradual increase in shows over the years; it was meant to be released and spread apart more before the pandemic started. Maybe the release schedule for shows won’t be this intense after a while, but Marvel seems to want to put out as much content right now as possible.
This makes sense; they had these shows finished filming roughly around the same time, and they can’t sit forever waiting to be released. Marvel needed them to further stories in other projects, and Disney+ needed the content to help add subscribers to the service. The interconnectivity of the shows to the films is a factor in when projects need to be released. WandaVision, for example, had to come out before Doctor Strange’s sequel for the storyline to continue correctly.
Disney+ is a whole new beast not just for Marvel to take advantage of but also for Lucasfilm with Star Wars content. It seems right now we won’t be getting a lot of Star Wars shows announced or coming out at a rapid pace, but for Marvel, it seems they are going the opposite direction. We see franchises die over time due to the declining quality of stories and the products not getting the feedback they used to.
Marvel may just be riding the high of Endgame being one of the biggest films at the box office; however, we. We already see some of the series not living up to some people’s expectations. Some series hit stronger with audiences, others not as much.
Some people have not supported the MCU recently because some wanted Endgame to be for them. I’m going to watch the shows when they release, but ultimately I won’t be surprised if I drop off some of them if it becomes overwhelming.
There is other content on other services I want to watch as well. I have loved Marvel ever since I was a kid, but I don’t want all of my content to be just what Marvel is putting out. I need a balance, and I think we all need that.
