WARNING: SPOILERS FOR MOON KNIGHT EPISODE 2
“Summon The Suit”

Moon Knight episode 2 starts off practically where we last left off with Steven dealing with the repercussions of what Marc did in the last episode. He gets fired from his job at the museum and starts to go on the hunt to find out more about Marc Specter. In doing so he finds a locker with his name and finally has a face to face talk with Marc for the first time. Steven still doesn’t believe anything that is happening to him so he decides to just go to the police but this is where we are introduced to Layla.

In episode 1 we heard Layla’s voice over the phone but we finally see her in person and we find out her relationship to Steven… or should I say Marc. We find out that she and Marc were married but filed a divorce. At this point I was so confused on when this whole relationship would be explained as it felt like they were bouncing around major details but we find out later in the episode a lot more about not only the relationship but the reason for Marc’s doings.

With Layla’s introduction we get this super emotional scene in Steven’s apartment which once again just highlights the phenomenal performance by Oscar Isaac. At this point in the episode I started to realize this show was more of a drama than anything else but once I accepted that fact the show started to feel more natural. These unexplained ideas felt more normal and I really enjoyed that aspect of it.

But now we get to the exposition-heavy part of this episode and this is after Steven is captured and brought to Arthur, played by Ethan Hawke. As I do every week, I have to point out the perfect performance by Ethan Hawke, but that aside, the way exposition for the general story regarding the Egyptian lore and Steven’s role with Khonshu works is integrated so seamlessly and created a good connection between me and the story.

Most MCU shows suffer from giving us information too late and keeping us in the dark too much but at this point we have a good chunk of information to keep us up to date with what is happening but still hiding enough so we have a great mystery story at hand.

We learn that Arthur used to be the avatar for Khonshu as Steven is now and Arthur painting Khonshu in a bad light, and him looking like the good guy, really made me feel for Steven as I could understand that inner conflict. This inner conflict is what leads us to the finale of this episode where Arthur once again asks for the scarab and Layla pops up with it. She gives it to Steven and they are again chased by this Egyptian dog creature just as in the last episode. But instead this time Steven won’t turn into Marc, gets launched out of the window… but lands on the ground as Mr. Knight.

This introduction to Mr. Knight felt really well done in my opinion. The tone felt very comedic but catered to the nature of this character. It didn’t feel comedic for the sake of changing the tone of the show as a whole but instead the character itself felt different. This led to a fight between the Egyptian creature and Mr. Knight, who at this point is basically just a stronger version of Steven, but Mr. Knight keeps getting beat by the creature so he lets Marc take over.

This gives us our first real look at Moon Knight in action as he runs overtop buildings, jumps across the sky, and finally defeats this creature again. Now here I expected the episode to be over, like last week’s episode, but instead we find out that Marc has become so strong that he created a barrier so Steven couldn’t become the main persona again.

Here we also learn the true motive for Marc and that is because Khonshu has told him that if Marc ‘leaves’ after this next mission, he will use Layla as the next Avatar. This is the connection I mentioned earlier and though I’m not sure how present this story is in the comics, I feel that for the show it creates a toxic relationship that we want to see play out.

So though this week’s episode of Moon Knight was very exposition heavy, it felt very seamless and still maintained the same level of emotion as last week, leading to the best episode of the show so far and great setup for the story to come.
