The Lost City is a perfect combination of action, comedy and romance, and that is ultimately its strength. The pacing is top notch, as it never drags, even when it slows down.
If there is someone that knows how to make a rom com, it is Sandra Bullock. The Lost City is the latest installment in the Sandra Bullock Romantic Comedy Cinematic Universe. Directed by Adam and Aaron Nee, with a screenplay by Oren Uziel, Dana Fox, Adam & Aaron Nee, the story follows Loretta Sage, a dissatisfied romance novelist who is on her most recent book tour with Alan Caprison, her cover model. In a series of unfortunate events, Loretta is kidnapped by Abigail Fairfax, a billionaire who believes that the city that Loretta describes in her books is real, and that she is the key to finding it. Alan, who is nothing like Dash, the dashing and heroic character he models as, decides to go rescue her.
It has been a while since both Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum have made a romantic comedy, and The Lost City was the perfect film to segway back into the beloved genre. Both actors, despite having been making more dramatic films during the last couple of years, prove that their strength is in romantic comedies as they both work incredibly well together and have undeniable chemistry.
Channing Tatum as Alan is the ultimate himbo, as he clearly cares about Loretta and knows her better than anyone, he is going above and beyond, despite having no survival skills and being extremely out of his comfort zone. He shines in this role and every scene he was in was a lot of fun, he was clearly having the time of his life with this character. Sandra Bullock also sines as Loretta, proving why she is still one of the reigning queens of the romantic comedy genre. It was a lot of fun to see these two actors showcase their talents in a film that combines the two genres they are strongest in.
One of the standouts is Brad Pitt as Jack Trainer, a scene stealer in every sense of the word, every moment he had in the film was met with boisterous laughter. Da’Vine Joy Randolph as Beth was also a joy. It was also very refreshing to see Daniel Radcliffe in this kind of role, as he further proves that he has impeccable comedic talents, as playing the evil Abigail Fairfax. This film let all of its actors showcase their comedic strengths and their undeniable chemistry is one of the main reasons why this film works very well.
The Lost City is a perfect combination of action, comedy and romance, and that is ultimately its strength. The story is fast paced and does not drag even when it slows down, it lets the characters have their individual moments and we get to know them very well by the time the credits roll, it does not feel superficial.
It is also filled with all of the best romantic comedy tropes, and honestly who could ask for more? It is the best romantic comedy to have been released in recent years.
