Skeleton Crew features an intriguing story that further explores the world of Star Wars. The entire cast is fantastic, especially the young actors. It should be noted this review is based solely on the first three episodes of the season.
Star Wars might have been hit or miss for fans recently, with Disney+’s The Acolyte failing to be picked up for a second season, but for those looking forward to Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, get excited, because it is really, really good. The story is cute and intriguing. It focuses heavily on a group of young children, each of which is fantastic in their role, and is a great piece of family entertainment.
When four kids – KB (Kyriana Kratter), Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), and Neel (Robert Timothy Smith) – discover a starship on their planet, they accidentally start it off and take off into the galaxy for parts unknown. Things get weird and mysterious though when everyone they come in contact with seems to think they are lying about where they are from, calling it a myth of a planet.
Lucasfilm has only offered up the first three episodes of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew for review purposes, two of which are streaming on Disney+ as of now. The series gives off pirate vibes, especially when Jude Law enters the picture at the end of the second episode. Of the bunch that I was given access to, the third episode is my favorite by far. We get to explore more of the new characters, and in particular, Law’s Jod Na Nawood and Vane (Marti Matulis).
There is a mystery surrounding Law’s character, although we do get a few bits and pieces of the puzzle in episode three. While this certainly has me excited for what is to come, it also worries me. Manny Jacinto’s character was also shrouded in mystery in The Acolyte, and we all see how that worked out.
The very first scene of the series sets the ton for a fun, family friendly dramedy set in the Star Wars universe. Smith’s Neel is unbelievably adorable. Viewers are sure to fall in love with him almost instantly. Especially when he is with his on screen best friend Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers). Their chemistry makes it feel like they are real-life buddies and adds something sweet and special to the show.
It is hard to judge Star Wars: Skeleton Crew after watching just three episodes, but so far, I am very inveseted in the story and interested to see where things go. I adore all four of the children, and honestly, I do not trust Jude Law’s character. Something about him rubs me the wrong way and I am not sure which side he will end up on.
The visuals are stunning and there have been some great action sequences. Overall, I am very impressed with this story that feels like pirates in space, with a mystery twist. I cannot wait to see where things go from here, and hope that they continue along this trajectory.
