The Traitors Review: New Reality Competition Show

The Traitors is a new reality competition show on Peacock and it gives off serious Mafia / Werewolf combined with The Mole vibes!

The Traitors reality tv series review

For those who love reality competition shows, there is a new one starting on Peacock January 12th and we highly recommend it. This series takes the classic Mafia / Werewolf game and mixes it with The Mole for something unique and fun. Some players are selected to be traitors at the start of the game, while the rest are called the faithful.

As far as gameplay goes, it is very similar rules to Mafia / Werewolf. Each night a contestant is killed by the traitors. The next day, the faithful must come together and decide who to banish, hopeful that it is a traitor. At the end of the game, the prize pot will be shared with those who survived — unless a traitor remains. Then they will steal all of the money that the group earned throughout the ten episodes.

This is where other reality TV competition shows like The Mole vibes come in. In order to add money to the prize pot, the players will compete in daily competitions. Depending on how these missions go, a varied amount of money will be added to the prize — with the ability to get up to $250,000. Where The Traitors differs from The Mole is that even the traitors will want to win and collect money, so that they have a chance at keeping it all to themselves.

The show is already airing on BBC, but it has now come to the States with its first season. The contestants are a combination of newcomers to reality television, and already established reality stars such as Cody and Rachel from Big Brother. This makes things interesting as some of the players have experience with things like this, and some do not.

It seemed strange at first, but The Traitors reveals who the traitors are to the audience in episode one. While it would have been fun to be putting together clues, and guessing right alongside the faithful like The Mole does, letting the audience in on the secret actually does offer some positive aspects. Because viewers know who the traitors are, they are let in on the conversations they have when deciding who to kill. This means that we know where their heads are at quite often, and get to understand why they are making the decisions they are — whether for good or bad.

Overall, The Traitors is a whole lot of fun. For those who love reality competition shows, this is going to be a new favorite. A spin on a classic game that switches things up in the reality TV world. Plus, it is fun to go into it having some favorites from other reality shows that you can root for.

The first season consists of ten episodes, with this review being based off of just the first four. We were instantly hooked and are looking forward to seeing how the rest of the season plays out. Fingers crossed that this series is picked up for even more seasons, because it offers something new for the reality TV scene.

About The Traitors

Hosted by Alan Cumming, this unscripted competition series is a nail-biting psychological adventure in which treachery and deceit are the name of the game. Twenty contestants (including reality A-listers) come together to complete a series of challenges with the objective of earning a cash prize.

The catch? Three of the contestants coined “the traitors” will devise a plan to steal the prize from the other contestants coined “the faithful.”

The series premieres exclusively on Peacock on January 12, 2023.
