Koala Man Season 1 Review

Koala Man season 1 is hit or miss. It has its highs and it has its lows, but at least it delivers a whole lot of potential!

Koala Man season 1 review

Koala Man is almost exactly what you would expect from the trailer. A middle-aged man trying to be a superhero in Australia and… well… things do not always go according to plan for him. He has everyone’s best interest at heart, and truly just wants to help the community, but he fumbles more often than not. The series follows him as he tries to balance his extra curricular activities with his family life, and things get a bit silly.

The first season of Koala Man is hit or miss. It starts off really strong, delivering on hilarious moments and jokes that really hit. Unfortunately after the first three episodes, it starts to take a dip. Things almost become repetitive and familiar, not giving viewers the shock value it did at the start. Don’t get us wrong, there are still some great moments here, but it just doesn’t always work.

As it continues on, Koala Man once again finds its footing. This is the pilot season and just because there are some brilliant minds behind the scenes, and some incredible voice acting performances, it doesn’t mean that everything will work perfectly. It is rare that a first season of something comes out, guns blazing, absolutely nailing everything it tries to do.

The more you get to know Kevin — the man who goes by Koala Man when hunting down criminals — and his family, the more relatable the series becomes. The final two episodes really solidify the potential of what is to come, and prove that there is a place for this wacky show in our world.

Koala Man season 1 isn’t perfect. It certainly has its lulls and dips, but what works about it works so well that the missteps can be forgiven. When a joke lands, it lands hard, and will likely have viewers doubling over in laughter. There is potential here, and that really is all we can ask for.

Overall Thoughts

Koala Man is fine. It is fun and entertaining for the most part. Season one starts off strong, but it does have a few moments that just do not work the longer it goes on. It starts to feel repetitive, even. The jokes begin to fall flat, although when they hit, they really hit.

The best piece of advice we can offer is to try to go in not thinking about the fact that is executive produced by the same brilliant mind that gave us Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites. Those shows are both incredible, nearly perfect, and while it is clear the same vibe is there, it just doesn’t work on the same level they do. Viewers that go in with lower expectations, might really enjoy the show. Even those that go in hoping for the next hilarious thing from Justin Roiland will probably enjoy it — it just will not exceed, or likely even meet, expectations.

All that being said, the first season is still quite enjoyable. It has the same humor you would expect, that will have you giggling as you just cannot believe they totally went there. Koala Man has its highs and lows, but ultimately it has a lot of protentional, and we cannot wait to see where it goes from here!

About Koala Man

Koala Man follows middle-aged dad Kevin and his titular not-so-secret identity, whose only superpower is a burning passion for following rules and snuffing out petty crime in the town of Dapto. Though it may seem like any other Australian suburb, forces of evil both cosmic and man-made lie in wait to pounce on unsuspecting Daptonians.

On a quest to clean up his hometown, and often roping his frustrated family into his adventures, Koala Man stands at the ready. He’ll do whatever it takes to defeat villainous masterminds, supernatural horrors, or worse: jerks who don’t take their rubbish bins down on the proper days.

Koala Man comes to Hulu on January 9th.
