Grace is back and bloodier than ever. Ready or Not 2: Here I Come delivers a relentless nightmare that cements Samara Weaving and Kathryn Newton as a top-tier horror duo.
I’ve made no secret of my obsession with Ready Or Not. I have told anyone who would listen how much I absolutely love it. It is one of my all-time favorite horror comedies because it’s so iconic, twisted, and dark. Because of this, the news of Ready Or Not 2: Here I Come had me feeling cautiously optimistic (that said, what a name, am I right? It’s the perfect title choice). It’s hard to strike lightning twice, especially when the first film had what I consider to be one of the most iconic endings in cinema history. However, the second this movie started, any doubts I had evaporated.
The directors, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett – also known as Radio Silence, made a brilliant writing choice by having this sequel pick up literally moments after the first one ended. We watch Grace – still covered in the gore of the Le Domas family – thrown immediately into the next level of this nightmarish game. I love this because it means she has had absolutely no time to breathe or collect herself. She is running on pure adrenaline and trauma, transitioning from one nightmare directly into the next.
The stakes have evolved from simple survival to a high-stakes power struggle for the High Seat of the Council. While the scale is larger, the heart of the movie is surprisingly intimate. The addition of Kathryn Newton as Grace’s estranged sister, Faith, was a stroke of genius. Not only do they actually look alike, making the sibling connection easy to believe, but their chemistry is electric.
As a sister myself, and a mother of two daughters, sister stories always hit me on a deeper level. This film explores their fractured history, which I will not get into in an effort to avoid spoilers. Watching them navigate their resentment while four rival families hunt them for the throne sent me through multiple waves of emotion. I adore Samara Weaving and Kathryn Newton individually, but seeing them together made me realize I need them in every movie together from now on.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a Ready Or Not film without the dark, insane, and twisted elements that made the original a cult classic. If you thought the first movie was messy, brace yourself: I don’t know how it’s possible, but this one is even bloodier. The kills are absolutely insane, and the action sequences are relentless. The ensemble cast is incredible once again, but Elijah Wood is the absolute standout as the lawyer of Mr. Le Bail.
It is nearly impossible to deliver two perfect endings in a single franchise, but they absolutely pulled it off with this one. It is just as iconic as the first, if not more so, providing a satisfying and shocking conclusion to Grace’s journey toward the throne.
I am all the way in on this franchise. Ready Or Not 2: Here I Come manages to expand the lore and the scale without losing the gritty, dark humorous spirit of the original. It’s funny, it’s visceral, and it’s a lesson in how to do a horror sequel right. Now… when will we get Ready Or Not 3?
