“Better Than a Churro”: Asher Angel & Paris Berelc Talk ‘Kissing Is The Easy Part’

Asher Angel and Paris Berelc discuss subverting tropes, late-night crying scenes, and beaver tails in this Kissing Is The Easy Part interview.

In the upcoming romantic drama Kissing Is The Easy Part, audiences are introduced to Sean (Asher Angel), a high-achieving, straight-laced student whose eyes are fixed firmly on his future. His life takes an unexpected turn when he agrees to tutor Flora (Paris Berelc), a rebellious peer, in exchange for a much-needed college recommendation letter.

As the two spend time together, the rigid boundaries of their academic goals begin to blur, replaced by a growing attraction that threatens to complicate Sean’s carefully constructed plans and force Flora to face her own hidden potential.

Mama’s Geeky recently sat down with stars Asher Angel and Paris Berelc to discuss their experiences on set in Ottawa and how they approached their roles. The duo shared insights into their off-screen bond, the challenges of filming emotional scenes late into the night, and how the film subverts the typical “jock meets nerd” tropes often found in high school cinema.

From workout grinds to personal breakthroughs in acting, the chemistry between the two leads is as evident in conversation as it is on screen.

For Asher Angel, playing Sean meant portraying a character who is super smart and a member of the physics club rather than a typical popular jock. Angel appreciated the depth of the character, noting that Sean’s uptight nature comes from a place of heavy responsibility.

“I just love how he meets Flora and she totally reminds him of who he is again,” Angel shared, adding that Sean is “showing up every day doing what he needs to do to get by” before Flora opens his world to a different view.

He also reminisced about the challenge of staying disciplined before his big shirtless scene while he and Paris Berelc were constantly tempted by a Canadian staple: beaver tails. Comparing the pastry to a classic snack, Angel noted that a beaver tail is actually “better than a churro,” though the two co-stars had to hold each other accountable to stay healthy until the cameras rolled.

Paris Berelc found a deep connection to Flora’s perspective on education, though she admitted to a funny moment on set regarding her own lack of experience with the SATs. She also highlighted a specific filming memory where she tapped into the character’s pain without needing to rely on personal experiences.

“It was a cool actor moment for me not have to personalize,” Berelc explained regarding a heavy emotional scene. “I really thought of Flora and her situation and was just in it.”
